South Melbourne market even has an in-house cooking school where you can learn to take advantage of all the great produce on offer in the market. While you may get lost in this market’s maze-like interior, that’s not always a bad thing – especially if you stumble into the markets lively food hall where you can buy yourself fresh sushi, warming katsu curry and of course the famous spinach and cheese Borek – the line for this stall can get pretty busy during lunch time but it’s well worth the wait.

Covering 17 acres, Queen Victoria Market ‘is the largest open-air market in the southern hemisphere’ with over 700 stalls – also labelled Melbourne’s best market. Known affectionately as ‘Vic Market’ or ‘Queen Vic’, this heritage-listed market has everything you could ever need.

Browse rare cheeses in the Dairy Produce Hall and get some cured meats to go with it in the Meat Hall before heading outside to the fruit and veg stalls where you can get your hands or organic veg and local honey.
 

Be warned though – these markets can get pretty busy on the weekend and it’s not rare for you to have to duck and weave around local’s trollies. Before you head home be sure to grab yourself some freshly prepared food in the food stall portion of the market – the Doughnut Kitchen Van pumps out the most delicious sugar-covered and jam-filled doughnuts you will ever taste. You will also be treated to live music and performances on the weekends.
