Disappointing Gold room experience

TripAdvisor rating 4.0/5

wendy1103 TripAdvisor review

We stayed at the Fairmont Waterfront for two nights in two Gold rooms. Although check-in is advertised as 3:00 pm, one of our rooms was not available until nearly 4:00 pm. Despite travelling together, our rooms were allocated on different floors (8th and 9th), which was inconvenient as it required frequent use of the lifts or stairs to visit each other. The hotel appeared to be very busy during our stay, and with only four lifts servicing the building, there were often long waits at peak times. Gold room guests have access to the Gold Lounge on the 9th floor for breakfast. Whilst there was a reasonable selection of food, it did not offer the variety one would typically expect from a five-star hotel, or what we assume would be available in the main dining room. Breakfast is buffet-style, including self-service coffee from a machine rather than table service. Although the Lounge is intended to provide a more exclusive experience, it was often busy, making it difficult to access some items comfortably. Overall, we felt the Gold rooms did not offer sufficient added value to justify the additional cost and would not recommend upgrading. Other Gold-level benefits, such as canapés and desserts in the lounge, were also of limited use to us as we were out exploring Vancouver for much of our stay.

We did not feel that our stay at the Fairmont Waterfront Vancouver was reflective of experiences we and other family members have had at other Fairmont hotels in the past. Our room did not appear to be fully ready when we checked in (we arrived early to store our luggage, but were notified when the room was "ready," however when we entered the room, there was a note for another guest and the room's amenities had not been replaced). I was also told that our room "had been changed." The room itself had loose carpet that needs to either be repaired or replaced as it was bulging enough to create a tripping hazard. It seemed like the elevators were rarely fully functional and we had a noise issue three nights in a row (and filed complaints the second and third night - see below).

We had an amazing stay at Fairmont waterfront. The room was lovely and the staff was friendly. Will have to stay longer next time.

We stayed at the Fairmont Waterfront while visiting Vancouver for the Christmas Market, and the location really couldn’t be better. Being right by the waterfront and within easy walking distance of the market, restaurants, and shops was a huge plus. We booked a suite, which was spacious, comfortable, and came with an amazing view—definitely a highlight of the stay and something the hotel does very well. Unfortunately, several issues took away from the experience. The pillows were surprisingly uncomfortable and made sleeping difficult, which isn’t what you expect at this price point. The breakfast buffet was also underwhelming; despite the variety, it felt overpriced and left us still hungry—you’re better off venturing out for breakfast nearby. Most concerning was the lack of support when we tried to locate a wallet that had been placed in a drawer. Housekeeping did not report finding it, despite it containing cards and everything inside, and the hotel was not particularly helpful in assisting with its recovery. This was disappointing and added unnecessary stress to the stay. Overall, the Fairmont Waterfront shines with its location and views, but some comfort issues and poor handling of a lost item hold it back.
