Serious Privacy Violation Despite Great Location

We stayed at Novotel Sydney City Centre over New Year’s while visiting Sydney. The location is excellent, and check-in was smooth using the self check-in kiosks. The room itself was spacious, clean, and comfortable, and the bed was good. However, there were early warning signs, such as hotel hallways filled with bags of used laundry and bedsheets, which didn’t feel appropriate for a hotel at this level. The real issue occurred on January 1st. Breakfast was included in our stay and, while there was a line to be seated, this was understandable given it was the morning after New Year’s Eve and the hotel appeared to be full. After breakfast, my wife and I returned to our room to rest and placed the “Do Not Disturb” sign clearly on the door. About an hour later, housekeeping knocked anyway to ask if we wanted the room cleaned. We politely declined. Roughly 90 minutes later, while I was asleep and my wife was showering, housekeeping again ignored the Do Not Disturb sign and knocked. I declined once more, half asleep. The staff member continued to ask repeatedly, at which point I became frustrated and clearly stated that we wanted privacy and did not want housekeeping. Despite this, the housekeeping staff opened the door and entered the room. At that moment, my wife was naked in the bathroom and I was only wearing shorts. The staff member said she needed to scan a QR code inside the doorframe and proceeded to do so using a handheld device, despite us being visibly distressed and having refused entry multiple times. This was a serious invasion of privacy and completely unacceptable, especially at a hotel charging close to AUD 1,000 per night during this period. Later that day, I raised the issue at reception. The staff member was apologetic and said she would escalate it to a manager and get back to me. No one followed up. The next day, I returned to reception and spoke directly with a manager, who apologized and offered late checkout, chocolates, or a bottle of wine. However, this was not about compensation. It was about understanding how such a breach of privacy could happen at all. When guests display a Do Not Disturb sign and explicitly refuse entry, that boundary must be respected. Unfortunately, while the location and room were good, this experience overshadowed our stay. Privacy and safety are non-negotiable in hospitality, and this incident fell far below acceptable standards.

Nice 2 night stay but nothing to rave about

Booked a Junior Suite for 2 adults and our 12 year old daughter for NYE 2025. Upon arrival, we noticed the sofa didn't turn into a bed as expected. Called reception and they advised the sofa didn't turn into a bed, and they expected the child to share our bed - what 12 year old sleeps in bed with their parents?! I double checked my booking to make sure I wasn't going mad and had indeed booked it for 2 adults, 1 x 12 year old - correct. It had to be referred to management, and we finally got a call back to say they'd bring an extra bed into the room. This was done, however this did then eat into our space in the room, especially with our 3 suitcases as we were only there for 2 nights. The room, aside from this, was nice - TV way too big and low down on the wall, but the bed was comfy. The layout of their ajoining restaurant is terrible, and to get around at breakfast you find yourself trying to squeeze between tables and chairs. On New Years Day, we had to queue for breakfast and this queue didn't die down - the restaurant simply isn't big enough for the number of guests. Also my husband wanted a fried egg, but the chef said they are cooked on demand, and he couldn't be bothered to wait based on how busy it was in the food area. Who cooks eggs on demand when the place is so busy?! These should be churned out one after the other onto a hot plate! Nice stay but amenities lacking here.

Central Location

We selected Novotel Sydney City Centre on York and Margaret Streets for is central locality to be able to walk to key areas we wanted to visit. Close to George Street, Martin Place, and Circular Quay, The Rocks, Opera House, and Barangaroo Esplanade. And very close to Wynyard Station for arrival and departure. The room was very good and clean. I have been a member of ALL / Accor for about 25 years, and stay in Accor hotels worldwide. Birdie Restaurant on ground floor is great as a café, bar and meals for evening and breakfast. Check-in is on-line ahead of time, or on-line on arrival, or at the check-in desk with a person. The staff are really friendly and helpful - Thank you. I highly recommend all the ALL / Accor hotels in the group :)

A great night’s sleep

I had a great experience at this hotel. Two nights of lovely sleep on a comfortable mattress. Provides modern charging facilities and had very friendly and patient staff. You felt welcome the moment you went in the doors. Would definitely recommend and will definitely stay here in future when in Sydney.

Work trip stay

Stayed 3 nights for a work conference. Great things is location. Wynard train station is right there so if travelling from airport very easy! Most things only 10 minute walk. Room, basics for what you need, can get a bit noisy as well. I was on 12th floor. I had to drop stars as unfortunately, as last day of housekeeping I returned to my room 6pm, it looked like they done half of it and forgot other half. Toilet paper was not refilled it, tissue box empty was not refilled, dirty cup/plate spoon left, rubbish plastic left near toilet seat. So was very surprised considering day before no issues. I called reception and let them know so lucky upon returning back from dinner, toilet paper was replenished. Had some issues on check out regarding surcharges but was sorted swiftly with front staff. Good stay if travelling for work and noticed lots were like myself.
