This was my 2nd stay at the 21c Durham and I went out of my way to ask Angel at the front desk what her name was so that I could leave a review. I missed the opportunity to write a review after that 1st stay and I wasn't going to do that again. This young lady is a rock star! She is a problem solver and has a great grasp of what it means to work in hospitality. I observed her in action during my check-in as she multitasked my arrival and a phone call for a person that had a problem in their room also when I needed assistance with the business office she handled it swiftly!

Good stay overall, but there is definitely room for improvement

I generally liked the hotel, but there were some inexcusable issues. For instance, there is only one elevator which is also used for hotel services. It's, therefore, dirty and disgusting. I even had to share this very small space with a maintenance worker that was moving a large bin of smelly trash bags down to the ground floor. Another issue is that there were no small trash bags in the room's very well used waste baskets. Hence, they too were rather dirty and disgusting inside. Lastly, while the suite I was in had a great view, it was pretty dark and poorly lit at night. The sofa looks like it has seen much better days as well. So, while the location and the overall stay went well, there were certainly issues that might lead me to choose one of the other hotels in the area on my next visit to Durham.

We stayed in a terrace suite. I’d expect the lock to the door off the terrace to work and I’d expect the sliding pocket door to close so you have a door to close in the bathroom. Both were broke in our suite. And we ate at counting house. We come to 21c to see the art. All the art in counting house was covered due to construction. It could have easily been uncovered for meal service and recovered the next day. Food was good ambience bad.

Extremely disappointed

Room was not ready for check in. Our son's room was not ready as well. The hotel is listed as a four star hotel on some sites and a five star on others. It is a three star hotel at best. The most disappointing issue was that the hotel promotes a political agenda, with signs of an agenda at the front desk, in the gift shop, and with the art on the walls. We will not come back.

Strange place

Rooms were nice, but overall the whole experience was odd. The valet felt weirdly unofficial and chaotic, the check-in attendants didn't look up from their computers to even say "be with you in a sec". One elevator was broken, and another barely worked. Just very "off" feeling about the place, and honestly about Durham. We'd chalk it up to a fluke, but for those prices, we probably won't be back to find out.
