interesting stay

Customer review rating 3.0/5

Mark Couples - 20/11/2021 Confirmed reviews ALL

The 21C is an interesting place to stay, the facility is well build and maintained, the staff was helpful. The centerpiece, the museum space, was unusual with a adult only theme. The rooms were clean but had the warmth of a jail cell. Very noisy hotel, we left after one night.

It’s one of my favorite hotels but not on Monday night

You never told me the restaurant was closed on Monday (one of the reason’s I stayed there) had to wait in the car at dark (I’m a single lady traveling alone), a man beat on my window asking for money, because I was double parked waiting for valet, TV didn’t work, so had to call for somebody to come up….can’t use remote from the bed…..you had to get up right next to the tv to change Chanel’s, NO MOVIES like Netflix (inexcusable) and the sink in the bathroom did not drain…other than that it was great……

Great Concept .... but is it enough?

Overnight stay in Durham. First time booking with 21C Museum. Great downtown location.

Loud party hotel.

Allen J. C. Business - 19/11/2021 Confirmed reviews ALL

I was placed on the street side just above the restaurant and main gallery. There were loud parties with amped up music two of the three nights. Then the party goers on my floor got to their rooms and partied loudly until 3:00 am. The last night I finally called the front desk who very kindly did something to stop the noise. I got very little sleep those two nights so I asked if I could keep the room until 2:00 to catch up on my sleep before going to the airport. They very kindly allowed me to do so and agreed not to disturb until then. Sadly, I still never got any sleep as housekeeping knocked on the door 5 times and the front desk called once at 11. I know the partying is not your fault, but I should have been told about the parties and perhaps given a quieter room since I was not part of those groups. And definitely the staff should be informed about not disturbing the guest when the check out time is modified. I wanted to love this hotel as I am an art historian and your museum hotel is a wonderful idea.

Always nice. The one thing I would recommend and ask for is that you have better and hotter coffee in the morning - with REAL milk or 1/2 & 1/2- and some Decaf too. Some of us don't drink caffeine. Thanks.

Friendly, good location

The staff was helpful and friendly, in every instance. Room was very nice and modern. Great building with history and great art. Coffee was disappointing, along with closed restaurant.

inexcusable - bridal suite triple booked

Disgruntled B. Couples - 17/11/2021 Confirmed reviews ALL

back in Jan 2019, we paid in full for the 21C suite for our wedding weekend. when covid forced us to delay our wedding by a year, we were assured that our reservation was secure and would be transferred to our new date. we received multiple confirmation emails to this effect, and the week of the wedding i started receiving "your stay is coming up" emails. i also called over a week before to ask questions about the suite's amenities, and was transferred to the sales dept, who confirmed that my reservation was in the system and cheerfully answered my questions. so imagine my surprise when, the afternoon of my wedding rehearsal, rehearsal dinner, and welcome drinks, my parents discovered that the 21C suite was not just double-booked, but TRIPLE BOOKED. and because another couple was paying to have their actual wedding at 21C, they were given preference, and therefore the suite. as i was supposed to be participating in my own wedding rehearsal, i instead got a phone call informing me that 21C would not be honoring our reservation and essentially i would be out on the street. on the day of my wedding. and i'm 37 -- i waited a LONG time for my wedding. everything had been arranged for my bridal party to get ready in the 21C suite the day of the wedding, with the photographer, hair, and makeup artists all meeting us there, and for my new husband and i to spend our wedding night there. NOPE. triple booked. how in the holy hell is that even possible?! how is there no red flag that pops up in your computer system? i still can't believe this really happened. a literal nightmare. i could go on, but really, what more is there to say?! you failed to honor a reservation/contract that had been in place and paid in full for over 2 1/2 years, adding tremendous stress in the 11th hour to an already plenty stressful wedding during late-stage covid, which we had spent over 3.5 years planning for and anticipating. please please publish this review on every one of your platforms. let people know to run away. all my vendors and friends/family now know to tell ppl to avoid 21C at all costs. we live in durham and will make sure to keep telling our story as a warning to anyone who will listen.

I chose your property based upon a recommendation from the ArtsMarket Conference. When the driver stopped the vehicle in front of your facility, I knew that I was at the right place. The banners hanging outside were waving like a welcome sign as I'm a huge art lover. Upon entry I was blown away by the amazing artwork that fills the gallery space. The attendant at the front desk was kind and helpful also. My overall experience was great. It was like living inside of an art museum. I will definitely choose this property again when I return to Durham!

The purple lights are cool, I love the focus on art. But the hotel smelled like sewage the moment I walked in the second double doors and all the way to my room. I don’t think I’ll stay here again given other options in Durham.

Just OK for me

Excellent location in downtown Durham- close to restaurants and bars. Small metered parking lot next to hotel, which is free on the weekend so did not have to pay for valet. Entry into the hotel is less than impressive, and the hallways appear old and run down. The room, however, was very clean and the bed comfortable. We had to call for extra towels and the AC had to be adjusted. There was also a water drip outside the bathroom. Overall, the stay was ok. For the price, I expected a much more upscale experience.

We enjoyed the special opportunity to stay in a non-traditional hotel with wonderful artwork throughout the facility. The rooms were well kept, and the restaurant in the hotel was fantastic.

Bad hotel, but good idea

Basic hotel ammenities were lacking: there was no "do not disturb" card, the lights flickered on and off in my room, the heatind did not work well, and the shower was incredibly leaky. I liked that the gym was open 24 hours, but when I was there at night, a couple workers (?) stopped and just stared at me though the glass. I wouldn't stay here for business (OR lodging) ever again.

We worked for over a year with the hotel for our wedding weekend & had a block of rooms for our family as well. We were very disappointed with how difficult it was for our guests to reserves room in our blocks. There was no online way to book so each guest had to call the hotel. We had several family members call several times and leave messages without getting responses & then they were not given the room rate since other people had called & spoke to a representative. When I called to get an extra couple of rooms for just those that were never called back - I was abruptly told no. Check in for our guest took over an hour. We called several days ahead to ask for early check in because we knew we had rehearsal and dinner that Friday and were told no. When we arrived at 4 (which is check in time) SEVERAL rooms were not ready. Our family members were late to dinner due to having to wait in the lobby with multiple other groups trying to check in as well. The ladies at the desk were doing everything they could to try to get people checked in & I don't blame them at all. However, I even tried to call earlier in the day to let the staff know that we had a large group checking in & asked when it would be easiest to handle the group. Overall it was just not a pleasant experience & if I were to plan another event, we would probably pick another hotel due to all the hiccups we encountered

No follow through…

Arrived after 9pm and quickly given room. Suite was not as expected and a disabled room (1303).Was then moved to 1403. Neither room had any of the coffee amenities nor any pathing in the minibar. First room only had one pillow. Rooms are diagonal from Unscripted Hotel. Good view of their pool deck but very loud as their music played until near midnight. Asked for earplugs three times and was finally told that they did not have enough staff to look for them and they would be sent after night staff came in (but they never came.) was told next day that they do not carry them anymore. My wife spoke to front desk in morning and they were very apologetic. Coffee amenities sent up and arrive after we had breakfast. I had asked for a late checkout (I am a Diamond Accor Member) and was told no. I also asked about breakfast and was recommended some establishments down the street and nothing with my status. Again, staff were apologetic in the AM and gave us a 2pm checkout after I had already packed my belongings and had gotten ready (we did stay until 2]. Staff stated they would adjust room rate. When we checked out at 2, room rate had not been adjusted nor any notes left regarding this. We asked to speak with a manager and we were told they were in a meeting. They confirmed my mobile number and said to expect a call. It is now 52 hours later (and after a full business day) and I have not received a call. Overall, hotel is in good downtown location. Rooms were clean but had some wear ( broken light switches). I understand COVID could affect some amenities but this should be clearly explained to guest. Also, would expect a loyalty member to be greeted and appreciated but this was not the case. I didn’t even ask about an upgrade at check-in as the previous responses to other questions were clear that my Accor status meant nothing. Though the morning staff tried to provide good service recovery, they did not follow through. Obviously, this is modeled by the management who also did not follow-up. Would hesitate to stay here again.

Clean, quiet, nice, good location, little dark/dingy

Stayed for 3 nights for a business trip. Pros: Location, the museum concept and the friendliness of the staff. The valet and greeters were the nicest staff members. Room was very clean and mask policy was strictly followed. Easy to find overnight street parking. Cons: Room on the 5th floor was small, dark with drab detail. Lighting system in the room was confusing and the only main light came from a dim chandelier. Bathroom light choices were either purple or an intense mirror light. It just seemed like they were trying to make a statement when it could be way simpler. Overall, nice stay in a great location but not sure the rooms stand out for the price compared to neighboring hotels nearby.

The location is nice, very central to downtown Durham. All staff was kind and easy to work with. The room left much to be desired. Uncomfortable bed/mattress, sparce (not interesting) decor, difficult to figure out lights (most were unplugged), and it was extremely hot in the room and it took several hours to cool down. After searching the room for hotel info (there was none), we walked some the whole floor looking for an ice machine and did not find one. Called the front desk to locate one and they said there are no ice machines and someone had to bring us ice. The gentleman was nice, took only about 30 minutes, but ice was delivered in a trash bag. For the rate we paid, I would have expected a more upscale experience. This was my first and last time at the 21c and will not recommend to my friends and family.

Totally overpriced, frustrating experience

Friday-Sunday for a staycation. We live in Durham. Ate at counting house, was good. Have been before. Room was disappointment. Comforter was two sheets over a towel. Called and asked for blanket. Not received until night 2 and we got a very thin hospital blanket. My husband went home and got a quilt and pillows from the house. Bathroom shower light was out. I called. Not repaired. Phone in room didn’t work except on speaker. Nespresso in room was decaf. I stumbled downstairs on Saturday morning and found coffee. Excellent. But no one had mentioned it. I’d called for room service and was told it might start at 10. I had things to do before 10. Ok. Sunday Am, expecting coffee, there wasn’t any. Ok. Give time. Probably refilling it. 30 min later still no coffee. Cmon. I am paying $500 a night. Killing me. Room not cleaned on Saturday. Not sure why. We were out all day. Maybe covid. Communication would have made a lot of this better. I was expecting a boutique hotel with service. Instead I got a cramped room with less amenities than camping. Doubt your business will survive with this experience.

My wife and I recently stayed two nights in Durham at the 21C hotel there. It was in a great location and we had a great corner room overlooking Tobacco park. From the valet, to the front desk, we received excellent customer service.

Interesting place to stay. Art was interesting. Front desk staff were great. It was a Monday so everything was very quiet. Only wish that I e had been a bit more accessible. Hotel felt a little shut down with restaurant closed and check in at lobby.
