Great Art Hotel, Needs Some Attention

When we checked in, the desk clerks were very friendly. The car valet was also very friendly. On entering the hotel, we noted that two of the four elevators were not in service. When we got to our room, the shades were lowered and we raised them with the chains on the shades. When we went to lower the shades, the chain broke on one of the shades. As it was late, we reported it to the front desk the next morning, along with reporting that the bathroom sink was draining very slowly. Both of these issues were fixed by the time we returned to our room later in the day. The drawer on the night stand next to the bed was broken and had been glued shut. The other side of the bed nightstand drawer opened and closed as it should have. We tried to use the barrel shaped refrigerator, but we eventually noticed that it had been unplugged from the wall. We plugged it in and noted a constant noise from it. This is obviously why someone, perhaps the previous guest, had unplugged it. This was reported to the front desk and never fixed during our stay. The room needed a refresh. The furniture was old and worn, and the TV should have been mounted on the wall. There was no safe in the room, which is unusual today. During our stay, we were gone from our room for most of each day attending our convention which had brought us to Durham. When we returned about 4:00 p.m., the room had not been cleaned. We were very tired, and we had to ask the maid in the hall to clean our room. After sitting downstairs for 30 minutes, we returned and the room was clean. The day before we checked out, we contacted the front desk and asked for a 12:00 check out, instead of the 11:00 a.m. check out. We were advised by Amy, the front desk clerk, that she would allow us an 11:30 check out and to contact her the next morning to see if a noon check out was possible. On the morning of check out, we contacted Amy, and she very harshly explained to me that it was not possible to extend past the 11:30 check out she had already given us. This was unfortunately, our last interaction with the staff from 21c Museum Hotel, causing us to leave on a bad note. The art in the hotel is very interesting as are the basement vault and the mezzanine restrooms. The staff in the restaurant could not have been nicer regarding the art displayed there. Overall, the stay was fine.

I always enjoy 21C hotels with their cool, boutique feel. This one could use some minor overall maintenance - sink was slow to drain, door closed so forcefully it was nearly impossible not to slam, shower door glass misaligned, shade pull fell apart, gym was hot, water in gym was hot) but the staff was very pleasant and overall things were fine.

Horrible Stay

Booked 2 rooms, ended up in one room. Was told we would be responsible for paying for connecting rooms for noise. Turn thermostat up over 80 degrees in room. Front desk wanted to argue and would not answer why she had control of the thermostat in room. The next day I was confronted by management about the issue that occurred earlier that morning. Management was rude and wanted to be combative about why I was upset and how I reacted. After I had explained how I was treated.

We are sorry that you did not enjoy your stay, however we have to take into consideration all of our guests satisfaction and there were numerous complaints received that night due to the noise disturbance originating from your room. We enforce a zero tolerance policy regarding unruly or perceived intimidating behavior towards our teammates, especially towards the female overnight supervisor who reported the interaction and uncomfortable experience to management the following morning. Although we are happy to see our guests enjoying evening time festivities within reason, this is not a party hotel and is of course this why, you were encouraged the depart by the Manager on Duty the following day. Our A/C wasn't working in our first room so they immediately transferred us to another room. However, the receptacles at the bedside didn't work on one side of the bed and the master switch for the bedroom lighting didn't work. The hotel staff and bartenders were very polite and responsive. The sinks in the bathroom were slow to drain and one was unusable. It also was sad that the purple accent lighting around our bath mirror did not work at all in our second room. We simply expected more from 21c since we have been to a few others in the country. We did notify the front desk when we left about these items and they were very appreciative of our comments. I forgot to mention that the A/C in the workout room was non-existent. Devon, who worked the front door/parking garage was awesome and very kind.
