The staff were wonderful; and generally I’m a big fan of adaptive reuse of old downtown buildings with art and quirky charm. This adaptive reuse is a total failure, because the management has over invested in cosmetics and “vibe” while leaving the basics in a state of hopeless neglect. The hotel itself is overpriced and dingy with strange lighting and terrible air conditioning. Most disturbing, it is physically inaccessible, generally understaffed, and therefore unwelcoming between 11pm and 7am, a time when travelers most need welcome and good service. Whatever glamor is being attempted with art museum is undermined by the drop tile ceilings in the upstairs hallway. Arriving tired and disoriented from a long flight after 11pm, I was left standing on an empty city street at night, trying to work out where the hotel entrance was. No obvious bell, a hugely unhelpful, unwelcoming sign (Lobby on 2nd floor). Fortunately, a half drunk guest with a key card stumbling back from a bar let me in. Thank goodness the front desk clerk was kind and very efficient. In my room, in this southern humid town, the AC only kicks in if you’re moving around. At over $250 per night, I did not expect to lie in a 75 degree room with 70 percent humidity and a faint musty smell from everything. Moreover, it was impossible to create indirect, low lighting in in the room. My choices were an interrogation lamp by the bed and massive chandelier that was more bizarre than beautiful. My departure at 6am two days later was no better since no hotel services were available before 7, no open restaurant and no one at the front desk. Astonishing. I literally could not wait to leave.

Appreciated being able to check in early and having a room upgrade. The room was clean and quiet. The hotel was interesting and we really enjoyed all the artwork. It’s in a great location and had a lot to do around it.
