Final Stay at Banyan Tree

This review is very hard to write. BT has been a special place for our family since we first visited when they opened in 2010. You can read about these visits in gushing reviews I've written over the years. We returned again in March, and it's sad to say that it will be the last. There were three issues that affected our stay: 1) The villas are falling into disrepair. Our villa had a hot tub and it was broken when we checked in. Aside from not working, the light was popped out and the wires exposed. It took 3 or 4 visits from maintenance people before they determined they couldn't fix it. Each visit had to be coordinated for privacy and security reasons to the point where I felt like a contractor managing a project. It remained broken for the whole stay. The shower was unusable, running hot and cold, and needed to be fixed, which also required a visit from maintenance. The villa had chipped paint and general signs of wear and tear over the last 14 years. The resort has redone the beach villas a few years ago and will apparently soon begin a project to redo the remaining villas. 2) Prices are just too high. BT has a number of restaurants on property. They are all great. We didn't have a single bad meal the entire time. Breakfast is especially a treat. However, the prices have gotten out of hand. You wouldn't know this because the menus (with prices) are not posted anywhere online. For example, a cheeseburger at Sands (casualish) is around $40 after tax and tip. I get this is a high end resort, but prices are way higher compared to past visits. It feels like they are funding the project to enhance the villas by raising prices on the current customers who won't even be able to enjoy that benefit! You can (and should) consider the restaurants elsewhere in Mayakoba. The Pueblito has a couple of cute spots for lunch and Casa Amate at Andaz is a dinner favorite. 3) Customer Service. I left a couple of clothing items in my villa. I immediately contacted the GM, Octavio via WhatsApp. He confirmed they found the items and I provided a FedEx account number for the shipping. Well, it's been over 3 months and after MANY follow-ups, I still don't have my items. I've tried calling the resort to be transferred and then hung up on. This was also the case ahead of my visit when I reached out repeatedly with basic questions about our stay only to have my emails unanswered. The service at the resort is great. Before and after is surprisingly abysmal. The stay wasn't all bad, which is why I gave 3 stars. We tried Haab this visit and loved it. The spa is always something special, and our meals were all delicious. Management throws a party for the guests on Thursdays, which is a lot of fun and very generous. However, as special as this place has been to us over the years, it will be our last visit. There are just too many issues to distract me from enjoying the place like I used to.

Not our first visit to Mayakoba - the location and tranquility of the resort is second to none. The villas are starting to look a little tired around the edges and need some TLC. Food selections on resort are wide and varied as you can access all the other hotels. The prices are not cheap but basically what you pay at a “good” restaurant/hotel in the US/Europe. Service is good at the hotel - we did have issues with the concierge system offered (via WhatsApp). Golf buggies booked to take us to dinner that simply didn’t turn up on more than one occasion sadly. The beach at Mayakoba is good - but not great. Minimal seaweed (thankfully) but they appear to be trying to keep the beach sand in place and are working on the beach. However we found a better area of the beach (and for swimming) by going 10 mins up the beach. Golf course was great - cold towels were a nice touch!

We can’t recommend this resort enough. We had such a great time that we decided to extend our stay and change our flight. This is our second time here and we will be back. A lot of friends have also come here because our recommendation and they all go back very pleased.

We had a spectacular stay at Banyan Tree Mayakoba. The staff were incredible and the resort itself was gorgeous. Every restaurant is fantastic especially Cello and Saffron. We will absolutely be returning to Banyan Tree because of how the staff treated us during our stay. 5 star experience.

My wife and I loved Banyan Tree. The villa was very private, spacious (super high ceiling over the bed), clean, and the private pool and shaded seats were beautiful. The Mayakoba property is tremendous with 4 hotels spread out across it- but you’d never know without taking the free boat ride around the area. The bikes make it easy to get around but you can always call for a golf cart if needed. The beach club and pools were a 10 min bike ride away, which we enjoyed. I’m not a golfer but the course looked nice. Finally everyone is super friendly and they even assign you your own personal concierge that you can WhatsApp (Hi Fabiola!) that can help with anything. The only slight issue we had was the toilet had a weak flush and got stuffed twice on a few pieces of toilet paper. Maybe it was just an issue at our Villa but not a big deal. Overall I highly recommend Banyan tree.
