Fairmont Mayakoba - an unforgettable vacation

We stayed at the Fairmont Mayakoba for 6 nights. It was utter bliss. The room was spectacular with gorgeous furnishings and a beautiful lagoon view. Using the bikes to get around was an unexpected pleasure as was walking on the beach and visiting the other properties. We were fortunate enough to have a butler named Marko assigned to our room. Let me just say he knew what he was doing. He made all of our arrangements and checked in on us without being overbearing. He arranged for a boat to take us to dinner at Saffron at one of the sister properties. The boat ride was romantic and beautiful. We rented kayaks and Kelly gave us a wonderful tour of the lagoon. Her passion for the nature around the hotel was infectious. We took cabs to 5th Avenue twice for dinner. We used Yelp to find great restaurants there and felt very safe. We used the bikes on the nature trail and, while the signage was a little confusing, we had a blast looking at all of the animals and visiting the other properties. Book this hotel. You won’t be sorry.

We had one of the greatest trips our family has ever taken. The beaches, food, excursions, and service was all excellent. We loved our butler Rodrigo as he was extremely knowledgeable in the area and helped us with even the silliest of things. We will be back.

**WARNING** Fairmont forces us to pay for our stay when we arrived even though we already paid an advance. We arrived at 12.30AM with two sleepy children and wanted to check in. Two VERY rude women said that they could not see that we had paid and if we didn’t pay we would have to leave. We even showed them the confirmation from booking.com AND the bank transfer but that didn’t help. We reluctantly paid for one more night just to get our room and put the kids in bed. The next day we went to the reception where they, once again, said that they couldn’t charge the amount from booking.com. We asked how we as guests should be liable if their issues with booking.com and the manager answered how it was their issue. Also, they said that if we wanted to avoid these issues in the future we should book directly from their website and not use a 3rd party platform. We have been in contact with booking.com numerous times over the last days and they say that we, of course, have paid. They have contacted Fairmont many times by phone and email without any response. Now we still do not know if we “have paid or not” but I guess we’ll find out when we check out. This has been a disaster and I can not warn people from staying here enough.

This place is huge! It's part of a sprawling property that includes several sections of the Fairmont, plus some privately owned residences, and then the Banyan Tree and Andaz, which are long golf cart rides away. Even within the Fairmont proper, it's more than 5 minutes by golf cart from the lobby area to the beachfront restaurant. We stayed in one of the 4000 section rooms, and they were very nice. Modern furnishings. Big bathroom and closet. Comfortable bed. There are multiple pools on property. We struggled one day to get towels for lounge chairs. That was indicative of service that was mostly quite good but perhaps a half-notch below what you'd find at high-end luxury resorts. The food was very nice. There were three main restaurants to choose from, and you could get a free shuttle to the other nearby resorts if you wanted to branch out from the food options here. We also did a tequila/mezcal tasting one early evening, and a mixology class on another early evening. The fact that those activities are free are a really nice touch. Perfect for happy hours! The location is about 45 minutes south of the Cancun airport and about 20 minutes north of the Playa del Carmen 'city center'. So, taxi costs can start to add up if you're venturing off property, and renting a car might be a cost-effective option. The golf course at Mayakoba was in great condition, as you'd expect from a course that has hosted PGA and LIV Tour events Overall, I recommend it.

We have just returned from our trip to the Fairmont Mayakoba. It was our first long haul trip with our baby boy of 10 months. The hotel staff were amazing and especially great with our son. A real family hotel. Special mention to Valentina Moreno who was so helpful whilst we were away and made the trip very special
