Beautiful resort but could use a few improvements :o)

The resort itself was BEAUTIFUL. However, we made dinner reservations weeks in advance but they were CANCELLED due to the restaurant being closed but we were NEVER notified of this (this happened twice). We also had brown water in our sink one morning..we requested to speak with management but were never able to meet with them. The food was good but not amazing, and we never understood why they gave us a checkbook for everything.. we felt pressured to add 18-20% tip for every meal/drink/service even though we paid for the all-inclusive package. Also, the all-inclusive package is NOT all-inclusive, there were some restaurants and food items that required an EXTRA fee, so we had to CALL the front desk to obtain the all-inclusive pamphlet that told us what was included or not. This pamphlet was NEVER provided to us or even discussed when we checked-in. Food takes a bit long to come out. The breakfast buffet was small and had minimal options, though the fruit was good. The amenities were good- we enjoyed utilizing the paddleboards, boat ride and catamaran they have at the resort (except the cenote- you cannot swim, you just look at it and there are many bats with bat poop). The beach itself was gorgeous and they have barriers to block seaweed as well as large waves, which made the beach feel safe/clean. There was a gorgeous pool in front of the beach near the Brisas restaurant which had very few pool chairs that were always reserved in the morning until the end of day so very difficult to sit by the pool there. Overall beautiful resort, though, with gorgeous foliage, we enjoyed the large pool by La Laguna as well as sitting along the beach. The beach had plentiful beach chairs.

Our dinner at Gaia within Fairmont Mayakoba was nothing short of spectacular. Our waiter Enrique truly elevated our experience. Enrique's recommendations, including the perfect wine and tequila pairings, were impeccable, ensuring our meal was not just eaten but thoroughly enjoyed. Fairmont Mayakoba is a sanctuary of luxury, but dining at Gaia, particularly with Enrique's service, was a highlight of our visit.

To start with, the location is beautiful, the staff is friendly and the rooms are well kept. With that in mind, I wish I knew: - Most of the restaurants on the property are booked more than a week in advance. We had a choice of 4:30pm or 9:30pm for dinner most nights. It would have been nice to have been warned. - The beach pool had all their chairs taken well before 8am most mornings. Nobody was in any of them, but they were reserved by people putting their stuff on them. - The main pool was similar, with very few spaces available and of the chairs empty until late in the morning. Get up early and reserve your spot - The prices are very similar to hotel bars and restaurants in the US. Don't expect any discounts for the strong dollar. - The bird watching and other things included with your resort fee are also hard to reserve. It would be nice if someone asked ahead of time. - The distances are far and there are shuttles and bikes. But the shuttles are often full and around meal times the wait can be over 20 minutes. Bikes are also hit and miss. Sometimes there are bikes available and sometimes not. - We left something a necklace in the pocket of a robe in the spa. It disappeared. I'd expect that in a cheaper hotel, but I'd like to think it would be found at this esteemed venue. - The rooms near the front lobby are VERY loud and not soundproof. If your room is on the same level as the main lobby, ask to move.

I’m not quite sure if we stayed at the same hotel as the rest of the reviewers on here or if it’s down to expectations (for the cost) but we felt the fairmont was average at best. Having stayed at various places in various price brackets across the area over the years this hotel was a disappointment for the price point. The site is huge and not easy to get about your reliant on golf carts which you queue for and which constantly zip around the place and frankly are a hazard. Getting a lounger is bun fight and if you do find one expect to stand there for an hour waiting for someone to point you in the direction of where you can get a towel (especially on the beach). Everything seems like hassle - the lock broke on our room so we couldn’t get in, the lights didn’t work at the beach at dinner so we ate in the dark, don’t ask anyone for anything for anything pre 11am you won’t get it. You have to book the boat trip weeks in advance we were told no even though it seemed to go out half empty each time! Food is average apart from the hix bar in the lobby in food and service is fab. The reception staff told us nothing at check in about the property. There is little or no ambience around the place you could be anywhere. The main areas are clean and beach is clean but Our room was subject to sewer smells and construction noise every morning and overlooked nothing expect a mud bath. All of the above would be acceptable and I wouldn’t not even raise them if this wasn’t a very expensive five star hotel in which I believe non of the above is acceptable. A big disappointment for our holiday and There are other hotels in its class which are a step beyond in terms all categories.
