Hospitality - forget it!

The highlight of this hotel is its proximity to the major Edinburgh attractions - the art galleries, museums great shops and lovely places to eat and the prices are reasonable. We had ordered a room with facilities to cater for my needs as a partially disabled 80 year old and this room was just what was needed - relatively spacious, clean, comfortable and with excellent views over Princess Street - however, the noisy and incessant clatter from the delivery vehicle to Marks and Spencer, throughout the night and which is virtually next door, meant one sleepless night for both of us for if the window was closed the room became uncomfortably hot. The front desk needs someone who knows what the word HOSPITALITY really means, disseminate to the staff throughout the hotel and make sure they know what their job entails. We arrived, tired, following a long journey and having to carry cases and bags, to be met met with sheer indifference by receptionist Samson and a trainee. We all had the distinct impression that they thought this was acceptable behaviour, until I told them in no uncertain terms my interpretation of how guests should be received and welcomed. Would I go again? Probably not, as feeling valued and welcomed are part of a holiday - and there are other nearby places to explore which may well welcome our hard-earned cash with true Scottish hospitality and warmth.

Stayed here for business. Expected to get some work done, but that was not the case. WiFi connection is largely unusable and the hotel’s internal network is in desperate need of an upgrade or better routing settings applied. I ran a speed test - and whilst speeds are average at best, the ping/latency times are abhorrent. An average ping of 224ms with a peak of 779ms on download and average 579ms and peak of 2578ms on upload… we are talking about a user experience of a dial-up connection from the 1990’s! Totally unusable for anything that isn’t plain text reading: forget YouTube, social media, work, etc. Mobile phone coverage in the room is useless - I literally had to step out to the street for anything data related. Unacceptable in 2024. Went to bed very early because of nothing to do due to the unusable internet connection. Half an hour later, the fire alarm goes off and the hotel is fully evacuated with the fire brigade in attendance. No explanation or follow up from staff. During the evacuation they were more interested in twiddling around on their phones (presumably this was a rare opportunity for their phones to connect to the outside world, being out in the street) rather than attending to guests during the evacuation. (25/06) Thankfully one more night here left then I will be back to the real world from the Bronze Age…

Just a poor hotel in a great location.

The rooms are tiny and have no ventilation. They will tell you that this is because the hotel is historic. Yet, they have completely renovated these tiny rooms. Old hotels had bathrooms near an outside wall so that a window could be opened to air out the room, both for bath steem and stink. In their renovation, they put the bathroom by the room door. NO ventilation. On top of that, they have a partial wall shower that can work on larger showers. But not on small ones. Water spashes all over. Steam and stink all spilling over into a room that has only a small crack of window to open. They have a room fan. But the fan doesn't fit the socket under the window. Genious. When we entered our room, the smell of their disinfectant spray was so strong we could hardly breathe. But there was no way to ventiale it quickly. This is the 9th hotel we've stayed at on our tour through the Brittish Isles and it's the only one I'd never stay at, nor could I ever recommend it. It's also the only one that would not provide free water in the room.

Very poor customer service

I booked and paid in advance for a stay at the Mercure through Lastminute.com a year in advance as I was visiting the city to see Taylor Swift. When I arrived the hotel had no record of my reservation. While I understand the fault on the booking was not necessarily the hotel's (although Lastminute maintain the booking was confirmed at their side) the hotel staff's response to the situation was a complete lack of empathy and the customer service was poor, particularly given it was 9 pm at night and I was with my 11 year old. The main person I was dealing with was unwilling to help us with any solution or ideas and simply kept repeating that their hotel was fully booked and I would need to look elsewhere (no offer to help with this). When I asked if I could order a (non-alcoholic) drink while we tried to resolve the situation, I was told we weren't allowed to drink a drink in reception. There was one kind member of staff who stepped in and got us chairs to sit on (after about 45 mins) but all others seemed completely uncaring. In retrospect I am glad that I did not stay in this hotel if this is how they treat customers. I cannot comment on the rooms as we didn't get one!

When you are an early riser, getting a cup of hot chocolate can be a great start to the day. A hats 🎩 off, "atta girl 😀" to ANNA who made the milk Fresh & Hot long before the 7 am opening to breakfast. Thanks again ANNA!
