Jack1795 Couples - TripAdvisor review

Stayed here whilst attending a works Christmas party in the city. Booked well in advance but still paid a premium rate (in my opinion) for a relatively small room - (we knew what we were paying for size wise) On arrival, check in felt rushed/disorganised. We were told we could check in early if we signed up for the rewards scheme by scanning a QR code. After some time messing around trying to sign up the receptionist gave up and let us check in anyway (turns out we were both already members) having just rushed in from the cold/snow it would have been appreciated if we could have just checked in as opposed to messing around! The room was small, as expected but this didn't prove an issue during our stay. I did however feel we had paid over the odds given the size and in hindsight should have booked elsewhere for the same price but larger room, the location drew us to Mercure on this occasion. Cleanliness was a real issue in the room. On arrival the window was wide open, room was freezing cold and seemed generally worn/dirty - not to be confused with the age/style of the building. The inner window didn't close at all and meant noise/draught came through the outer window/frame. The windowsill etc was filthy as were the curtains/nets. Various sockets and fixtures were loose around the room including a completely missing light switch. I don't think I would stay here again, I can cope with the aged features, uneven floors etc as they are characteristics of the building, the other issues are clearly just overlooked/ignored. It shouldn't take a refit/refurbishment for a room to be safe & clean.

Dear Jack, Thank you for your review. I am very sorry to hear of the disappointment felt during your stay with us. Your feedback is very much appreciated and I will certainly address each point with my housekeeping and maintenance team as well as inspect in person the room you stayed in with them present. I thank you for having provided this feedback to me which will be used in the best possible way to make any necessary amendments to ensure procedures are strengthened and more robust. The team and I sincerely appreciate you having chosen to stay with us on this occasion. Kindest regards Chris Butler General Manager

The first room I was in was like a cell ( window at high level) and very dirty. The carpet was old and ripped and bathroom had mould. The second room which I changed to was not much better. The hallways to the rooms are also in a state!

Dear guest, Thank you for your review. I am sincerely very sorry to hear that in hindsight, choosing our smallest room grade may not have been the ideal choice to meet your expectations. We have a variety of room grades here at Mercure Nottingham City Centre which include our Privilege rooms and Suites which would provide the additional space you require and desire. While we were unable to find any mold in the room you claim was there, we appreciate you allowing us the opportunity to investigate. With regards to our corridors, we do indeed having some repair work taking place upon our main staircase walls and corridors. I am sincerely very sorry should this in anyway have impacted negatively upon your stay. We appreciate your feedback which is well received. Kindest regards Chris Butler General Manager

Me and my partner stayed here for one night on 25th December - we wont be returning. We booked a "Standard King" room as we are both tall and a little extra space makes it much more pleasent but the room we got was little more than a rabbit hutch. It was so small (room 203) I went back to reception and asked them to check it was the right room, which they said it was. I dread to think how small the standard rooms were. On top of that, the other issues we found: The curtains were stained. The carpet was stained. The bedside tables were delaminating and looked scrappy. The silicon in the bathroom was scruffy, and the sink drain was worn and tainted. The pillows were stained, although I didnt see this until leaving as I made the bed and moved the pillow itself. The bed was some sort of cheap 2-box thing on wheels that moved every time you did anything on, or near it. The heating didnt work. The AC/Heating unit just blew cold air directly across the bed, and would not produce any warmth. I had to turn it off, and I asked reception while we were out to fix it to warm the room. When we got back they had just turned the unit on again, blowing cold air around the room. It wasnt cold freezing in there but my partner would have liked it warmer, she had to wear extra bedclothes. Some of these may sound minor to you but we paid what i would consider a significant sum of money for a nice hotel and a nice room rather than going budget and was sorely disappointed. This is not a £245 a night room. Far from it. Also, granted we were staying in the City Centre on a saturday night, but the pounding music from a club outside was very loud. It didnt bother us too much as we are heavy sleepers, but if you're not, be prepared for thumping basslines until 2am. On a positive note the staff were polite and friendly, and the breakfast before departure was excellent and well stocked. PS please service your lift, it's making some horrible noises.

We have such great experiences with Mercure in the past. Has is it that you have this building in your portfolio - what an embarrassment for you. We arrived at a dreary, run-down building completely wrapped in sheeted scaffolding. The sink and bath were cracked, the heater in the bathroom was covered in a black bin bag, the bed was springy, and the sofa was filthy. No bars were open and there was not a restaurant as shown on your website! The staff were understanding and professional and gave us a full refund and we went somewhere else.

We booked this stay after receiving a £100 hotelgift.com voucher and thought this hotel was perfect for site seeing in Nottingham during the Christmas markets because of it being located in the city centre. However, we arrived early and were told our room wasn’t ready, we asked if they could hold on to our bags but the chap said we can pay £30 for early check in (so the room was ready) but we turned this down and said we can wait if they could hold our bags until we could check in, which they were happy to do and started to prepare a ticket for our bag. The manager then came out and told us if we wanted to check in early we could sign up to their member system which we didn’t mind doing as it was free but we were a bit confused as they wanted us to pay just moments prior. The room that was given to us was something resembling a prison cell and the only window was a small one close to the ceiling, which left us feeling like our room wasn’t ready and they just gave us any room that was available but to be honest we mistakenly booked a double bed anyway and went to reception and asked if it was possible to upgrade to a king or super king bed. The chap at the desk said this would be fine and could cost us between £30 - £50 but he would need to check with his manager. The manager then came back and said the room we were given was the quietest room and biggest room for that room type but we knew we wouldn’t sleep in it and continued to ask for an upgrade. The manager then confirmed this would be possible to do but we would need to pay the difference, which in our minds would be around the £50 mark… nope, apparently because we partially paid using a gift card, the gift card company took a commission and the hotel only received £120 for the room that cost us £248 and he told us we would need to pay £90 for an upgrade to a king bed. This didn’t sound right at the time but we knew we couldn’t sleep in the box room and proceeded to upgrade. The upgraded room was better but I must say they need to get the decorators in and do some improvements to the hotel, I know this is a an old hotel but the interior is very dated and the random picture frames around light switches, air con controls and light shade isn’t a good look. Also investing in some PIR lights in the hallway may be worth while as the light from the hallway was coming through under our door and peep hole. The style and cleanliness of the room we had does not warrant the cost (£278pn). In summery we felt a little bit scammed with the whole upgrade situation but if you’re looking for a bed in the centre of Nottingham, this is a good choice ( just make sure you go for the suite not a double city view as I’m guessing they would be the good rooms). We won’t stay here again, based purely on the value for money but I understand that the hotel is in prime central location for those who just want a bed after a night out.

Dear guest, May I firstly thank you for your very comprehensive review. The time this will have taken you is very much appreciated. I am sincerely very sorry to hear that the original room you had booked was found to have fallen short of your expectations due to the size of the room. I am however pleased an upgrade was able to be arranged for you but do apologise should the charge have been higher than expected. Your feedback is well received. As you will have seen we are in the early stages of refurbishing the hotel. We sincerely appreciate your feedback which will be taken on board and used to make any necessary improvements. Thank you once again for your review. Kindest regards Chris Butler General Manager
