On a business trip to the UK, Midlands and London, provided the ideal opportunity to sample the different Accor hotels in the UK, similar to the last trip 3 months ago to Paris, trying a coupe of the hotel’s brands (Ibis and Mercure) in the same tier group there. The distinguishing features between the hotel’s brands were less defined and inconsistent, similarly with the facilities and provisions, unlike in the Asia Pacific; at noted overlaps as well and in some cases the lower tier establishment have more or better facilities than the next level hotel. These stays were of overnight durations, excepting for the London Heathrow location, used as a base and for 3 nights. For my bookings in the Spring & Summer, the hotels tariffs vary day to day, sometimes 50-100%. This hotel is a free standing, 4-storey building is centrally located, wedged between the High Street mall (with fast food, restaurants and pubs, Sainsbury, M & S, etc.) and the grounds of Winchester Cathedral, with limited onsite paid parking. Entering the hotel, reception is on the right, with the lifts opposite. Behind the lifts is the bar area, which runs into the dining/restaurant area. Décor and furnishings are period themed. Check in was quick as there wasn’t a queue. Room didn’t appear to have been upgraded, perhaps full booking or only have one room type; however, as it was an older building, was reasonably sized. Room appointments pretty basic, with an electric jug and tea and coffee making facilities, but no drinking water and bar refrigerator. Lighting was average, not bright but not dim. Bed was acceptable but would have been more comfortable if air-conditioned; only opening windows. Bathroom appointments basic with towels but no toiletries. As an Accor member welcome drink was provided but no welcome amenity General condition of room appointments and bathroom fittings looking on the tired side. Check out was fast, as an Accor member with registered fast check out.

Very good location and with a view on the cathedral. Spacious room and very clean. the breakfast was excellent, with delicious scrambled eggs, bacon and potatoes. Excellent fruit salad. The personnel was extremely friendly and helpful. The restaurant serves very good food too.

1986 wants its hotel back.

For a chain hotel this is seriously dated. It’s like stepping back in time and makes for a depressing experience . It needs more than a lick of paint and new carpet,it needs ripping out entirely and brought up to date. Don’t like to be negative but I was embarrassed booking my overseas work colleagues into this place. Even the outside is unattractive, almost brutalist design. Tape holding carpets together. Good location, didn’t have much interaction with staff, but the decor and fittings just disappointed for what you would expect for a hundred quid a night in 2024.

Pleasant stay.

Comfortable, well located hotel in the beautiful city of Winchester. I recently stayed 4 nights with friends I found the staff very friendly and helpful. In particular Emma in the bar and restaurant has excellent customer service skills.
