Great stay with friends and family. Nice room, great customer service and excellent food

Very good but not as good as the last two years

Enjoy the hotel as think it is very good value and we find the staff friendly (like northerners). We have now attended 4 new years eve parties at the Dunkenhalgh and although we enjoyed this year we felt that the event itself was a little disappointing and whilst the last two years we could not wait to return next year we will probably return (we are 4 couples - friends) but perhaps have discussions as to other options. Our analysis of what made this event less successful is as follows: 1) The group were very good, professional and excellent musicians and if we had come for a music event they would have had the thumbs up, however this is a party and they did not create that party atmosphere as well as the previous guy. We also felt that they came on too late and the atmosphere had already been lost. 2) No balloons and no or few party poppers which again led to less of a party atmosphere. 3) DJ average, in our opinion a DJ should interact and create a party (he was on a long while during the meal and before the group started) and we did not feel he read what was required from the guests, on quite a few occasions he managed to empty the dance floor and he did not create a real party atmosphere. 4) Mix of guests not as good as previous years (I guess this is difficult and not really anything you can do about this) It was interesting as the Christmas Ball we went to Saturday 14th December we discussed was rather a young clientele and we said we were perhaps getting too old (our average age is 56) however at this event we felt that we were too young, whether in actual age or young at heart! 5) Lovely table staff but interacted with us less than previously. What I think you need is a very good MC to create a party atmosphere and keep the party going. Last year you had this and we went to bed buzzing, this year whilst generally quite good we went to bed slightly deflated as a comparison. It is more difficult to pull it back as any younger crowd may be less keen to return and you tend remember the latest event. We would love to attend again but need the better party atmosphere. In previous years there has also been a wedding going on at the same time and perhaps that helped to make it altogether buzzier.

Rooms are still tired and cold or too hot

Was offered very tired and poor rooms in the stable area bit idea why these rooms are even used as far below the standard expected in a hotel today, even old premier inn hotel rooms are better. Then offered room in hose area again which require a magical mystery tour to find. Told limited choice as Xmas house keeping had not cleaned all rooms. New rooms where so hot it was crazy, then toilet in one room was Brocken and leaked. No other rooms available till next day, was allowed to swap again and told bags would be moved. Got back bags not moved and new room layout was much better but as new emergency exit room could only get warm with heating on full blast otherwise it was freezing

Pleasant stay found the staff friendly and on the helpful. I thought some attention could be shown to the facilities as in places the carpets looked worn and threadbare and the paintwork needed attention outside but these are only minor complaints. The food was of good standard and plentiful and the evening meal was excellent. I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again and my partner is thinking of bringing her daughter here for her birthday

Food good service good up to coffee cheese and biscuits plenty cheese only given 6 cracker s for 6 people could not get any more

Such a disappointment from the hotel and spa

G. Friends - 08/01/2020 Confirmed reviews ALL

I stayed here at summer and my stay was amazing, 2 nights and a spa, I loved it that much I booked it again for my 30th birthday expecting to have the same amazing experience. I was extremely disappointed. On arrival we was told we had to go straight for our treatments as there was a staff absence which was fine as there was nothing they could of done about it. We booked to have treatments together, that was then impossible so one had to wait while the other had their treatment. The waiting area was closed as the showers upstairs was leaking through so we had to wait on a footstool instead, in our coats with our bags as we had to time to check into the room, nothing peaceful and relaxing about it. We went to our room after which was at the complete opposite side of the hotel when our friends was at the other side next to the spa. Our bed was two single beds put together with sheets on top, obviously the falling between the two beds throughout the night became extremely annoying, we would of had a better sleep if the single beds was separated. Throughout the night we was woken up by what I can only describe as the sound of mice running around the room, finally after the noise stopped we fell back to sleep and was woken up again by what sounded like mice scratching in the walls. Finally after falling back to sleep we was woken up again around 7am by lots of banging upstairs that sounded like builders banging around. There was no chance of having a relaxing mini break for my birthday. When we left the room and looked outside every single window on the corridor above us was wide open, this made me think the excessive loud banging was either builders or doors swinging open and closed with the wind. When we went for breakfast and asked my friends how their sleep was they said fine, no noise. There was plenty of rooms on the other side of the hotel that would of been quite and empty so why not allow us to stay there in the first place! Lastly we came to breakfast at 8:30, the continental breakfast was horrible, flys everywhere, all stale, the ham was hard and curled over at the ends and the cheese was hard and changed colour due to it being left out so long, clearly food items are not fresh as the meal the night before when we asked for mayonnaise there was a skin on that too as it had been poured into tiny jars and left out uncovered. The only part of the stay where we felt welcome was by the lady who greeted us who told us the news of the staffing issues, she was apologetic for changing the time of the treatment.

Faulty bath

I had a fairly comfortable stay at the hotel. I would say that you have to ask what facilities are included in your stay as not readily provided unless you ask. Also my bath taps were not working - the cold tap so baths were scalding hot with no way of cooling down.

There was a party of fourth people that took over the bar area was loud and intimidating

Anna E Friends getaway - 08/01/2020 TripAdvisor review

We were a party of 4, having booked a spa break with dinner, bed and breakfast and a 40 minute spa treatment and full use of spa facilities. We upgraded to 2 x twin superior suites and they were beautifully decorated, large enough for a seating area. The bathrooms had separate baths and showers. We were in a quiet part of the hotel and had a great night's sleep in very comfortable beds. The hotel and spa staff couldn't do enough for you and they were so friendly and welcoming. The dining room could do with a bit of updating but the food was amazing. We asked that the chef be complimented. The bar area was lovely and modern and we spent a great evening there after our meal. We hope to return soon.

Dear Anna E, Really appreciate your feedback and review, hopefully we will see you return soon, Kind Regards, Ivan Lynch, General Manager.

We were a party of 4, having booked a spa break which included dinner, bed and breakfast with a 40 minute spa treatment and full use of spa facilities. On arrival we asked for an upgrade to 2 x twin superior rooms. The rooms were stunning and large enough to have a lovely seating area. They were just the right temperature too. The bathroom had a separate bath and shower which was a bonus. The beds were large and very comfortable. All the staff at the hotel and in the spa were so welcoming and friendly, they couldn't do enough for you. Although the dining room was looking a bit tired, the food was amazing and we asked that this be conveyed to the chef. The bar area next to the restaurant was really lovely. I would thoroughly recommend this hotel and I hope to return soon.

Rooms not ready 1st night.. Receptionist rude. No apology or offer to compensate. Alternative room not disabled friendly as required and as pre notified. Pool experience equally appalling. Rooms not ready for 2nd night. No apology. Receptionist rude. When finally rooms ready stank of paint. Doors to exit painted shut and required brute force to exit. Disabled guest could not exit unaided.

The room and breakfast were very good.We were attending a wedding at the Sparth Hotel and booked Mercure because of the Spa facility only to be told on the Saturday 04/01/20 that the pool was closed due to excess chlorine levels. Very dissapointing

Well looked after at our function in the Portrait Room on Saturday 4th.January.

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay and family meal on Saturday evening. Staff excellent. Unfortunately we were allocated a bedroom where the heating was not working. This also applied to the heated towel rail in the bathroom. This was reported to Reception on Sunday morning.

Lovely stay, well worth the money but improvements needed.

Really enjoyed our recent stay, a spa package was well worth the money, great value. Few things could have been better but would return. 3 course meal was delicious in the restaurant, we really enjoyed it. The service could be improved though, we had to ask for drinks and try get the waitresses attention couple of times when it wasn't busy at all. Room service breakfast could have been better, raw poached eggs, strawberries not fresh at all or edible. No beans option. Facilities are great. Treatment was ok, not the best aromatherapy massage, i.e. didn't get to smell or choose the oils to begin and didn't get asked about the pressure etc but was nice enough, my husband ended up with the same even though he had booked the hot stones massage, he said it was nice though. We weren't offered the quiet room before or after either which was disappointing, or offered water.. few things could have made it much better. Hotel room was nice enough, although the shower dial was broken and the water wouldn't go down the bath drain and the water temperature in the sink taps was a nightmare, absolutely boiling when set to cold, took ages to adjust. Staff all lovely, lovely and clean everywhere.

Lovely but a little disappointed with the room.

We had a lovely time at the hotel on New Year’s Eve. Although we were disappointed with the room. I personally didn’t think it was value for money. Needs a little updating and a few little extra special touches.

We both enjoyed the room and the bathroom with a bath. Hot water and a nice soak. Breakfast a good variety, but could do with chopped tomatoes, not everyone likes fresh tomatoes. Overall a fantastic stay. Would come back.

I booked last minute for a bit of me time in the spa between Christmas and new year. The room was lovely and big. I especially liked the shower, nice and hot. Food was really good and the staff were amazing. Very friendly and attentive. The hot stones massage I had was lovely and highly recommended. The only down side really was the spa area. I liked the different rooms especially the aromatherapy room but everything was just a little bit tatty. Missing and different coloured tiles. The pool was great, a nice size but I was disappointed with the jacuzzi bit, with it being in the pool the water felt cold and not as warm as it should be. I did notice staff taking water samples though to check which I was impressed with. Overall a lovely stay but a bit tatty in the actual spa area. It wouldn't really put me off coming again though as the massage was great.
