We were late booking Sydney for New Year and this hotel still wasn’t full so that should tell you something. Location is good for public transport but it’s in a section of George Street which is less than attractive. The stay itself was ok. Bedroom was nice enough and bed itself ok. I did get a memory foam pillow which was nice. The lifts are dreadful- so as our room was on the 14th floor we spent a lot of time waiting. Staff were fine, generally. I’ve stayed in many Mercures over the years and they are variable. This one is bag average but comfortable enough.

Disappointment, definitely not a 4-star stay

We chose the Mercure Sydney based on its strong online reviews and because we wanted at least a 4-star hotel. Unfortunately, our stay was a major disappointment from the moment we entered the room. The carpet was dirty, the bathroom felt very outdated, and there were no basic amenities provided—no toilet amenities, bottled water, or even coffee and tea. I had to call the front desk to request slippers and extra towels. To make matters worse, water backed up from the shower drain. As an exhausted parent traveling with young children after a long flight, the last thing I wanted was to keep calling or packing up to move rooms. Many of these issues were basic expectations for a hotel of this standard. The lifts were extremely slow and it felt like only two were operating, which added to the frustration. Breakfast had a decent selection, but the service was disappointing. I repeatedly had to ask for help getting water, as I couldn’t leave my young children unattended. I was told multiple times that water was available at the buffet, but since we were seated at the far end of the hall, it wasn’t safe to leave them alone. Eventually, someone assisted me after I asked several staff members. Overall, this stay fell far below expectations. I would not stay here again. I could have spent more on another hotel, but chose Mercure expecting reliable quality—sadly, that was not the case.

Good hotel but cockroach in breakfast self-serve area not a good look

This is a well-located property conveniently close to Sydney Central Station. I have stayed there several times in recent years and the room and breakfast standards have always been good. I particularly like the 6.30 am start for breakfast - seven days a week. Staff service was of a high standard although I note self-serve check-in has been introduced which, while not bothering me, may not be everyone's preference. However,during my recent stay at this property I was dismayed to see a cockroach on the floor of the self-serve breakfast area on one morning and one again the next morning near the coffee machine. I was also surprised to find a hole in the bottom of my bed sheet. These may be little issues in themselves but they could point to wider neglect of the property.

This is a good hotel. I chose it because its location near the central station is perfect. You can reach the central station by train in 30 minutes from the airport, directly. There are also restaurants around the hotel. The staff was very helpful, and breakfast was good.

Greeted with a friendly smile and efficient check in. The room was perfect and the location great! Found a little street two blocks away that had plenty restaurants to find whatever you wanted to eat
