Er, SORRY!

I arrived and checked in after midnight. The receptionist took an age to check me in, her communication consisting of whispers at her computer screen, despite my pleas to speak up. I could neither hear nor understand a word she said. Anyway, up I went to Room 708, and the keycard didn't work. So back down to reception I went, and a senior, more sturdy receptionist re-issued my key. Back up to 708 I went. Sure enough, the keycard worked this time: in I went, switched on the lights, and there were people in the bed! Back down to Reception I dashed, calling out loudly that there were PEOPLE in that room, and that I won't be able to un-see what I just saw! (It was pretty graphic.) Old Mate on the desk put the blame on ME for not reading the room number "728" correctly, then took some photos and then somewhat desperately re-isuued my room and key. (The girl's scribbly writing definitely said "708" and not "728". Novotel's mistake, not mine.) Although I told my story to the Duty Manager the next day, there was no word of apology or empathy. I was charged heftily for one very tasteless breakfast. She could've deleted that. Sooo - safety and privacy are very weak at that Novotel on busy weekends. I didn't sleep a wink during my 3-night stay there, and I've had nightmares since then, of people breaking in to my home and bedroom while I slept. Worth mentioning that Melbourne's hotels were FULL of rev-heads that weekend because of the Grand Prix. I paid over twice what I usually pay at that hotel for the privilege of "what-an-experience". I've stayed there maybe 20 times in the last 25 years or so. Never again.

Room was fine, just quite dated broken tiles in the bathroom, noisey AC etc. basic 3* in quality. Breakfast at the hotel is to be avoided at all costs it was an insipid buffet. Location is good, won’t stay again as plenty of nicer options for the same price.

Absolutely an A-1 hotel in every way, cannot fault it. We only had a breakfast as far as food goes but we were given what we ordered exactly right. A pleasing feature is the area near the checkout where you can sit and relax while having a drink

We’ve stayed here before and for price/value is good. Natalia who served us for dinner in the restaurant was brilliant with the kids. One issue was the cleanliness of the pool. After a day in the city the kids were eager to swim and at 2:30 pm the pool was murky and they came out after their short swim itching. Obviously it gets lots of use in January but…
