Great location, great facilities, indifferent staff.

Let me start by saying this is a really nice property. The foyer, rooms, and rooftop bar and restaurant are all lovely. The Elevate Lounge isn’t particularly hip—it’s more of a classy, mature space. That’s the good stuff. We usually stay at a boutique hotel up the street, but it was fully booked, so we thought we’d try this place. What we really missed was the friendly, personalized service. I paid for a more expensive room because it was larger, had a city view, and came with club lounge access. At check-in, I asked a few questions about the club, and the staff member looked at me a bit puzzled and asked if I was a Gold or Platinum member. When I said no, she told me I wouldn’t have access. The way she asked the question felt a little assumptive, as though she had already decided I wasn’t eligible. I explained that I had paid for access as part of my booking. She replied that my booking didn’t include lounge access. I said it did. She wasn’t rude, but she was quite dismissive, essentially disregarding what I was saying. A line had started forming behind me, and I didn’t want to hold things up, so I told her I’d double-check my reservation and come back. When we got to the room, we realized we’d been placed on the 4th floor, facing a wall in an alley—not the city view, upper-floor, and larger room I had booked and seen in the photos. I checked my reservation and, sure enough, it clearly stated that lounge access was included. The booking was made with points through Chase—one of the largest banks in the U.S.—so I went back down to the front desk and spoke to the same staff member. I showed her the confirmation email and a screenshot from the booking site. I also pointed out that the room wasn’t what I had booked—it should have been on a higher floor, with a view, and more spacious. She insisted the room was the same category as the one I booked. But clearly, something was off. In every hotel I’ve stayed at, rooms with lounge access are always on upper floors—and this one had also stated as much when I booked. I understand mistakes happen, but in other situations like this, I’ve always been treated with a bit more trust. Here, it felt like the default approach was to prove me wrong, rather than work with me to figure out what went wrong. She eventually called the duty manager, who came out after a lot of back-and-forth on the phone. I showed her the confirmation, explained everything again, and finally she acknowledged that the booking had been mishandled between the booking system and the hotel system. She also confirmed that the rooms in that category on upper floors—with lounge access—are in fact larger. About 45 minutes after arriving, we were finally in the correct room. Later, we visited the rooftop bar, which was really nice. While I went to a meeting, my partner tried to go to the lounge for canapés around 3 p.m., but was denied access. The staff member told her to wait, then ignored her and her friend. After about 15 minutes, she asked again and was told they were still sorting it out—but that they could go in and have a drink. Eventually, they were allowed in and enjoyed the food, but the initial interaction was frustrating and rude. The next morning at breakfast, we entered the lounge and were asked for our room number. It wasn’t on the list. I said we’d had a lot of trouble already and was a bit tired of it, assured him we had access, and made it clear I intended to enter. They gave me the benefit of the doubt and let me in. At checkout, a man asked how our stay was. I told him the story, and he simply said, “Sorry about that.” That was it. In summary: great location, great facilities, indifferent staff.

This used to be my regular hotel in Melbourne, haven’t stayed there since 2018, the upgrades to it are stunning, it feels like a totally different hotel. The check in kiosks are fantastic and seamless. Small hiccup with room service where the item I ordered was out of stock, however this was replaced with another item off the menu at my request and despite the new item costing about $10 extra I was delivered the new meal free of charge along with a complimentary drink free of charge. Would love to know what happened to the pool though!

Booked a long 7 night stay as a Platinum Accor member, and a Voyageur Plus member. Check in at a separate desk where i met Natalia, Guest relations co-ordinator, who was welcoming and v helpful. No room upgrade but i had booked a Deluxe 40m room, for which she said she had allocated a 13th floor corner room with a good view. Hotel is very stylish once you get away from ground floor, corridors reflecting wall theme décor even on the carpets, with well known places named in Melbourne. Room was slightly split being on a corner, which felt like two separate areas which was good. TV facing the bed and one opposite the mustard colour sofa and chair. Mini bar, coffee pod machine, and some average grade tea bags. milk in the fridge. However, no one replenished / checked this for the whole week! A jug was provided to go along to the taps on each floor to obtain cool water, sparkling also which was clever for the environment, and a nice feature for yr own needs. The "Award winning" 2023 lounge on the top floor, was well furnished, though a little conflicting in styles. At busy times, mainly over the weekend, the Lounge was uncomfortable with too little seating, stressed staff. Too many people had access to the lounge, as it either normally comes with a room grade, or Accor membership. However, "Sold" access can be added on to the cheapest room, which raises revenue, but is always a disaster for a hotel experience. This was so with The Sofitel in Darling Harbour Sydney when it opened, capacity 200, 300 trying to get in! Selling access Must have a limit knowing yr capacity! Breakfast offerings ran out quickly, juices, smoothies were all gone by 10am, when it opened until 11am. Going in at 9.30am, there were no tables free. A champagne was also available for those that wanted at breakfast. Fresh egg dishes also available, healthy options on a list, which provided a great variety. hot Baked beans, Mushrooms or Tomatoes and bacon and sausage, which were hot in their containers, (most hotels leave these almost cold.) Charcuterie and 3 cheeses with selection of cut breads, but these remained the same as breakfast , repeated at dinner. Evenings, Champagne and an excellent selection of white, sweet, and red wines were available, but the same each day in the eve. Varying same cycle of canapes of small tartlets, samosa, or Spring rolls, Oysters on my last eve when 1/4 of the lounge was occupied on Labour day Monday. Same breads and cheeses, meats as breakfast. Variations would help, and many Pullmans provide a warm option, a "Mini Meal", usually vegetarian for all, could offer as a small plate. This would add some variation to what is really repeated and predictable every night. Only Savoury. Nothing sweet was offered, which would have balanced the offerings, and be normal for other hotels, either fruit, or mini desserts, or fridge items. Daily 5-7pm, again people were rushing in before 5pm to get a seat, and the weekend was really unpleasant. Lots of children seemed to be there some around 5 years of age, running around, picking up food, very noisy, with parents in beach shorts vests and thongs. A Dress code of smart casual is normal at such a Club Lounge, and needs to be notified when people check in, with a clear notice before entering, certainly for the evening. A Club Lounge according to Accor Brand Directors, is an Adult space, with families (over 12s where alcohol and parental supervision is present) accommodated in a separate area, which they have in an annexe, but did not use. Clearly the staff were stressed and irritated but i was told, "we cannot really say anything"! Well, Yes they Could, and should be supported, as should the irritated guests. The G. Manager should ensure their is a set standard here. Without doing so, Victoria State Health and Hygiene standards are breached. Children with alcohol present, so wildly running around picking up foods, drinking out of bottles, everywhere, licensing may well be breached. Staff if they had a Notice of Dress code, could refer to it, and children accommodated in the other side area. So this should be changed. the staff seemed to feel the same when i discussed it with several. many adults made the effort, some chose not too. Senior Management need to act, and a Supervisor in there that can refer to the displayed Smart casual dress code, and families area. As a Director myself, i know how to empower staff, and good standards can easily be impressed on people. Also notified at check in. This is a failure of this lounge capability, and i saw and heard many people annoyed by the overall crowding, and lounge feel at these times. On the roof, is The Blossom Bar, which has a glassed area on 2 sides of the building 14th floor, great and rare spacious views of the city. Mostly people had the wonderful pizzas, from a huge rapid Pizza oven that were perfect. Cocktails, spirits, with a wide selection of International beers. orders can be placed, but not so easy to find, as all through an app on yr phone which you have to scan in. Room service was very quick, but limited in choices, and only until 9.30pm from here. It is closed Sunday and Monday, a great mistake on holiday weekends, and loss of revenue, that would also relieve the Lounge over capacity issue. The location provides plenty alternatives outside of the hotel, the best of Melbourne's food and cafe culture, mostly Asian foods nearby. The poorest elements was reception and dreary lack of knowing much, or what is possible, and a disinterest in really they or you being there! I had to ask for an office chair, so i could do some work at the round table in the room, as there is no desk or chair otherwise. But no one knew if this was possible. It was with some prompting to find out! The largest let down was Housekeeping here. The rooms on arrival were perfectly clean and well stocked. However, this is not done through yr stay. I had to ask for my room to be cleaned, and on my last day here when yet again, nothing was done by 3pm, i was told they are only done between 3-5pm! This was from the same dreary reception. This is not acceptable, normal, or a good standard. Meeting friends weekends or late afternoon or 5pm, it is a very poor impression to take them to a room where no housekeeping has been done. Nothing was replenished in the minibar, nor drinks at all! It was only serviced / cleaned 3 times in a 7 night stay. I had friends visiting before we ate out or in from 4pm, so it is not unreasonable to have the rooms serviced by then. Several locally, and another a Diamond Accor member, said this was a problem here and irritating. I did not find out until this last night, somewhere on this oblivious App, and not notified to me, i could skip the clean and have a $10 credit for room service or 200 points to my Accor account. However, i shall be asking for this before i settle the bill when leaving. This also needs to be addressed by Management, clearly they do not employ enough Housekeeping staff, to have all the work completed! Again, this fails on all Accor standards let alone a Pullman which is a 5 star level, not The Branding. This is not met at this hotel in several areas, until the above is addressed. 5 star hotels have far more staff, services, food options, Lounge policies, proper cleaning servicing and even an extra evening service. Currently, this Pullman reaches the standards ins some respects, yet in others fails completely. Look at Pullmans in the Asia region that have full dinner services and far more staff, larger better rooms, and classify them as 4 stars only! It is simply not actively properly Managed, and known for this locally. Hits, and complete misses. I would need to see and hear that improvements had been made to return. Some serious issues around meeting Health, Hygiene, alcohol Regulations, and children's access / behaviour, and standards in the Club Lounge. Certainly it would not warrant any award as it operates currently! Its overall standard would be a 3.5 star only in Melbourne, and less internationally.
