Problem with mold in elevator

I stayed in the Heritage wing twice in January. The first night I was upgraded to a suite which was beautiful but too big for me as a single traveler as I did not need two rooms. Unfortunately the room was very noisy and I was awakened all night long by noise from outside. The second time, two nights later I was again in the Heritage wing in a lovely room where everything was perfect but I traveled to the 3rd floor in the elevator which smelled strongly of mold and mildew. I am extremely allergic to mold and after two trips up I came down with a chest infection caused by mold. I walked up for the remainder of my stay but 3 days later I am home but still quite sick. From all other perspectives the hotel was wonderful.

Disappointing

Had high hopes having seen the number of good reviews but unfortunately it didn't hit the heights. The best thing was the staff. Can't fault them at all. The location is fairly good for walking to the tourist areas. However the room disappointed us. The TV was on a wall perpendicular to the bed and there was no seating for two people in the room. So if you want to watch TV prepare for a sore neck. The room was also rather small for the price and quite noisy due to being above the hotel entrance. There was no bathtub, just a shower. Breakfast I would class as an average buffet. Had trouble one morning trying to get a table for two, but waiting a bit sorted that. The outdoor pool was pleasant. I wouldn't return as the hotel was not good value for money.

The fabulous Metropole

This is a world class hotel, combining elegance, history, and service. The staff consistently deliver personalized service. The food is excellent. Some of the rooms, particularly in the Heritage Wing, are small, but the Metropole is over 100 years old and rooms were smaller then. The common spaces are immaculate and ooze history. The bomb shelter tour reminds guests of the horrors of the Vietnam War and the role the Metropole and its guests played in the same. The club lounge is fabulous, with high quality offerings throughout the day. What a wonderful hotel.

Luxury for my first return to Vietnam since the war

What a great and historical place. Absolute luxury and service. They hire a zillion people to serve and they are all smiling. The included breakfast alone was amazing. We toured the bunker as well. Right in the center of town.

A Must Stay in Hanoi

From the moment we arrived at the Metropole, we experience outstanding and warm service and felt as though we were transported into a part of the city's history. I describe this as a must-stay in Hanoi as due to the unique blend of history, location and service. The location is in the French Quarter, right opposite the Capella hotel and near to the Opera house. Service We were only here 3 nights and yet the staff were already familiar with us over this time, often calling us by name and you can tell the level of training and ability to anticipate guest needs is on a level above a standard 5 star property. We also enjoyed the architecture, historic art and even the traditional and very formal uniforms of the staff. Yet despite this, the staff are down to earth and genuine - this isn't a 'stuffy' experience. Tyson had checked us in, in what was a very fast yet comprehensive experience. He guided us to our room and explained all elements of both the room and the hotel offerrings. It was the perfect way to settle into a new hotel. Rooms We were upgraded to a Grand Premium Room as a Gold member in the Opera wing. It does an excellent job of maintaining the period feel, despite being the newer wing of the hotel. The room was large and heavily decorated. We appreciated the quality dyptique amenities in the bathroom and the very comfortable bed. It was also spotlessly clean. Wardrobe spae was minimal however. It's also worth noting that the sound proofing was not the best, and we could clearly hear people in the main corridor. Our room was fairly close to the lift so this may be less of an issue elsewhere. Breakfast This was outstanding. There are two venues which offer breakfast and we opted for Le Club each time just due to the feel of the venue. Eggs were cooked to perfection and there was ample choice of hot and cold dishes available, as well as excellent quality bakery items. I don't normally eat bread but even the baguettes here were delicious. This is a buffet style breakfast. Special mention to Trung who greeted us each morning with a friendly chat and quickly came to anticipate our coffee order. It's small interactions like this that made our stay all the more pleasant. Food This was disappointing for the most part unfortunately. We ate at both Le Club and the vietnamese restaurant and both times thought the food was decent but very over-priced for the quality. This is despite us being Explorer+ members and getting a discount on the food. We had much better meals at nearby restaurants. The cocktails at the Bamboo Bar/Le Club were very good however. Other There's also a gift shop on site, with a range of quality locally made crafts and jewellery. We bought quite a number of items to bring home as gifts. We also bought from the pattiserrie on site that has a number of cakes, ice cream and french products for sale. The few we tried were delicious. We took the hotels 'history' tour and found it very interesting and compelling, given by one of the staff members who lived through the war-time period. We appreciated her personal reflections she shared with us.
