Classic Dubai Landmarks

The City of Life

Dubai is a city that has it all. Blessed with year-round sunshine and bright blue skies, the city’s remarkable landscape is easily recognisable from across the globe. Being the second largest and most populated emirate in the country, Dubai has grown from being just a small fishing port to a commercial hub of the region. Some of our favourite landmarks around the city include:

Deira Clocktower

An icon of Dubai, the Clocktower in Deira was originally built in 1963 and reconstructed in the 1980s. The tower plays a significant role in representing the growth and changes Dubai has seen over the past 5 decades. Its location in Deira has served as a link between the ports and commercial districts of Deira and Bur Dubai. Today the tower is a landmark for the area, and residents use it as a guide to navigate around the busy hub. Visit the Clocktower by metro, you can get off at Deira City Centre Station or Al Riqqa Station and explore the vibrant streets of Deira.

Burj Khalifa

No Dubai list can be complete without mentioning the tallest structure in the world – The Burj Khalifa. Soaring at over 829m, the tower opened to the public in 2010. The Burj Khalifa is a must-visit attraction and an icon of modern Dubai. It is conveniently located in Downtown Dubai right outside The Dubai Mall and The Dubai Fountains, and makes for a perfect day out. If you are planning to visit, book your tickets to the 124th floor observation deck for a time just before sunset so you can enjoy a fantastic bird’s eye view of the whole city as it changes from light to night.

Dubai Creek

An area that embodies all that Dubai has worked for, the vibrant creek of Old Dubai will take you back years in an instant. Take a traditional Abra ride from Deira to Bur Dubai to enjoy the sights and sounds of the port. If you are not one to cross the water, take a stroll along the Deira side of the creek to witness fishermen and tradesmen bring in their goods from the ships, assemble their stock for the markets and walk towards the old spice and gold souqs.

Burj Al Arab

One of the tallest hotels in the world and definitely one of the most luxurious landmarks Dubai can offer, the Burj Al Arab is an architectural and design phenomenon. One does not have to enter its premises to be awestruck by its beauty. Located on its own mini private island off Jumeirah Beach, the design of the hotel is inspired by a traditional mast of a dhow. Take a walk along Jumeirah Beach or Kite Beach for stunning views of the building as it reflects light off the ocean creating a surreal effect.

Dubai World Trade Centre

The original iconic Rashid Tower of DWTC was first formally opened by Queen Elizabeth in 1979. Today a landmark that represents the fast-paced commercially strong economy of Dubai, the 39-storey Dubai World Trade Centre building was once the tallest building in the region. Even though it seems overshadowed by a jungle of concrete skyscrapers around it today, it still represents the long and hard journey the city has taken to reach so far. Residents in Old Dubai still wait to catch a glimpse of DWTC as it is one of the first buildings one sees when approaching new Dubai on Sheikh Zayed Road.
