Kota Kinabalu
The capital of the East Malaysian state of Sabah, Kota Kinabalu is situated at the tip of Borneo, the world’s third largest island. KK, as locals have coined it, is a land blessed with nature’s most beautiful treasures. The perfect place for trekking in the jungle, exploring caves, whitewater rafting, mountain climbing or deep sea diving, the region is also known by the romantic name of “The land below the wind.” Visitors can climb the awesome peak of Mt Kinabalu, Malaysia’s first world heritage site or play with the orangutan, “the wild man of Borneo”, in the largest sanctuary of its kind in the world. Dating back millions of years, the rainforests in Kota Kinabalu are some of the oldest in the world. Here, explorers can admire the Rafflesia, the largest flower in the world. For those who like to swim, snorkel or laze all day on a quiet un-crowded beach of pure white sand under bright blue tropical skies, there are islands where crystal clear water, sunny beaches and beautiful coral will capture the heart completely. Culture buffs will have a fine time venturing into the interior to visit traditional longhouses, experience century-old festive celebrations or the “tamu” (local market place). Vibrant, serene and hassle-free, Kota Kinabalu is the perfect holiday destination.
