Poor old and bad service in the restaurant and bar

So I have stayed at the Mercure Charleston and that is good so I thought I would try the city version had high hopes all were left wanting slow lifts to floors bathroom small and a shower over bath poor water pressure had to hit the toilet ever time to stop it running fan so bloody loud had to close the door at night cups are crap they are trying to some kind of eco friendly using recycling coffee pods nope just garbage no movies or foxtel cheaper hotels provide this poor power point places at bedside the list goes on really need complete renovations before that think they can charge 200 a night got to the best Western Apollo before this place oh and parking is just abysmal and the charge you for it really just don't go

Convenient location. 24 hr reception was great and staff were friendly. We rang ahead to ask about car parking and were told that there’s usually enough car parking for all guests, but when we arrived there was a sign to say the car park was full. We then had to park on the street. Room was spacious but in need of renovation, particularly the bathroom. Minibar isn’t stocked in rooms.. you need to order your minibar items from room service. There were plastic cups for tea/ coffee which wasn’t a nice experience. We were woken up at 2:30am by people who were yelling out on the street.. so if you want a peaceful stay, perhaps try somewhere else.

A Budget Stay with Mixed Results - Location and Breakfast Excel, but Room Quality Disappointing

I chose the Mercure Newcastle over the Novotel after reading poor reviews for the latter and seeing their $600+ weekend rate. While the Mercure is clearly positioned as a more budget-friendly option, there were both pleasant surprises and significant disappointments during my 2-night stay. The Good: The location is excellent - easy walking distance to the waterfront and city attractions. Parking at $16/day was reasonable, especially compared to other city hotels (Novotel wanted $35, which is highway robbery). The staff were consistently friendly and helpful throughout our stay. The breakfast was genuinely impressive and exceeded expectations. The buffet offered fresh ingredients, quality sourdough bread, and surprisingly good coffee from the machine that actually tasted barista-made. Plenty of variety made it well worth including in your stay. The Not-So-Good: Our room on the 6th floor was disappointing. The view consisted of gutters and apartment buildings, and the dreaded shower-over-bath setup made bathing awkward. The air conditioning was quite noisy, positioned directly over the bed. The Deal Breakers: The soundproofing was absolutely terrible - we could clearly hear normal conversations from the adjoining room, which disrupted our sleep on the first night. Thankfully I had earplugs which saved me. For a hotel stay, this is unacceptable. The room desperately needs updating. In 2025, basics like bedside lamps, power points or USB charging near the bed should be standard. The lighting throughout was appalling - just a few dated wall sconces from what looked like the 1980s. Despite being an Accor Platinum member, there was no status recognition at check-in. Bottom Line: While the location and breakfast are genuine highlights, the poor soundproofing and outdated rooms significantly impact the experience. For a budget option it’s adequate, but the noise issues alone would prevent me from returning. The hotel has potential if they invest in proper soundproofing and basic room modernisation. *Stayed: Weekend, Room 621*

I really enjoyed my stay here. The hotel, while somewhat dated in some areas, delivers a quality experience. Staff are outstanding and the comfort and cleanliness of the room was great. I had a really good night's sleep. It was quiet and comfortable. The restaurant is excellent, with a good menu and good staff. Front desk reception staff are polite and very helpful. Car parking on site is safe and convenient for a very small fee. I will stay again. The room had all I needed for some business work after hours.

Great stay as usual. Service was outstanding by the team with Simon and Josh great in the restaurant and bar along with Abbey at the front counter - all very helpful and accommodating.
