We were disappointed in the manager …who ignored us when we arrived at the desk. We were given a disabled room when we had not requested one.. this was changed to another room same size when asked to be upgraded and told it would be £40 a night extra. Soon we discovered there were rodents in the ceiling eating the electricity cable to the desk lamp and skittering about for ages. There was an enormous crash in the night in the void above us. The manager was not there until 9am .. we had to go out early and when we saw him at 12 noon he was much more amenable and thanked us for notifying them and they were putting it right.. the rodent man was there. They compensated us with a free breakfast but we haven’t heard from them since. The two nights we spent there were like Fawlty Towers.

Easy walk into Oxford from this charming, well-run hotel (with a breakfast to die for!)

We had an absolutely lovely stay at this hotel- everything from the charming, well cared-for interior to the friendly and efficient staff made it an absolute pleasure! We had been expecting the quirky decor, but were also pleasantly surprised by the well-appointed bar, comfy sofa area and roaring log fire. We were initially attracted by the hotel’s location, as despite being outside the city it was located only about 20 minutes’ walk from the O2 Academy, where we were planning to see a gig. Driving and parking inside Oxford city is always chaotic, so it was far preferable for us to leave the car here and walk into Oxford. It was an easy (if not particularly scenic) walk down, passing a number of appealing pubs, so would be a great option for anyone with plans on the Cowley Road. Furthermore, the hotel is located very close to the river, which provides a pretty shortcut directly into Oxford centre- the walk would take around 30 minutes, taking in bridges, locks and parkland en route. The consistently excellent reviews for breakfast had also drawn us in, but we were really blown-away by how lovely this was. The light-filled conservatory was a delightful place to start the day, and the buffet was arranged to give a sense of being in a cottage kitchen- warm food was arranged on a hob, served from cast-iron casserole pans, and cereals, fruit, cheese and charcuterie were laid out on an island worktop. Wendy and her team were attentive and friendly, and everything was kept topped up and tidy. There was even an a la carte option, allowing you to order freshly-cooked eggs benedict, omlette, smoked salmon and more as part of your buffet. Best hotel breakfast ever! Thanks to Mercure Hawkwell for a wonderful stay. We can’t wait to return!

Great location, free parking, good breakfast, very helpful reception staff and Wendy at breakfast was lovely. This is a good hotel that is let down a little by house keeping that is inconsistent (turning up at 4pm one day, no shower gel when we checked in). Room was nice and comfy although the heater/ air con was noisy and the bathroom had been half revamped so tiles etc dated. Overall I would recommend as a base for Oxford, can walk along the river (40mins) or jump on the bus 5 mins walk away and be in Oxford in 15 mins for about £3 with a much better room/breakfast price than some others. Also good for Gluten free at breakfast and the one evening we dined in the restaurant.

This review would have been so much better if only the management had bothered to answer the 3 emails I sent. No reply from any management from my stay on 5th November .. the second time I emailed I asked if anyone was receiving them as concerned they had gone to a junk box but had a reply and was assured they were all being forwarded to the management team . Still nothing to date 29th Dec.. in addressing my health and safety concerns after I took a heavy fall and sustained grade 2 ligament damage to my ankle … see photos for the dreadful step that really is very dangerous on the landing / corridor to the stair case from room 118 I think .. I was after nothing from the hotel even though I am still paying for physio and in pain , just wanted them to address this as if an elderly person had fallen they could have been hospitalised . I went to reception and in fairness the girl tried to be helpful but could only bring me ice cubes wrapped in a napkin.. no ice pack ? No first aid box or first aider ? All that aside the hotel was ok .. nothing special .. the air-con /heater in my room was like a plane running its engines.. the pizza I had was very good , breakfast was excellent .. so my feelings on my stay .. well if only someone had bothered to answer my concerns , the hotel management really need to sort out their customer service and until they do I won’t be back or recommend this hotel
