Poor customer service

Avoid this hotel!!! Booked this hotel online while visiting family in Sheffield. Original observation was faint smell of paint so assumed room had been recently decorated, everything looked okay. Starred to unpack, and whilst doing so I pulled out the chair from under the desk and found a pair of (used!!) Men's boxer shorts on the chair!!! I immediately put them in a carrier bag to take to reception for when we were going out, later. When we approached a member of staff at reception they Immediately called the manager (a young Asian girl) who said that's not the standard that we accept at this hotel. She asked me to give her time to look into it, which we did. The next day, I spoke to her again and she said she still hadn't managed to find out who had cleaned our room and she would get back to us (again). We were there from Friday till check out on Monday and nothing was done except a half hearted sorry from the manager. On check out we were given our bill and paid for the meals and drinks we had during our stay and the manager wasn't available. No offer of some discount off a meal or of part of our stay, nothing! Very bad customer service!!! Other points, bed was extremely uncomfortable and broken. Hubby eventually realised that the caster had came off and bed was laying to one side. We decided to leave it till we saw the manager again but we didn't see her again. Toilet seat was misaligned and caused the use of toilet to be difficult as any solids were landing on the sides and not the water, leaving the toilet marked after every solid visit! Room was dusty on floor lamp and window was difficult to open and close. Room was overly warm too. Pillows were VERY flat and barely raised our heads off the mattress and although I should of asked for more pillows, I thought to make it adequate for my taste I would of needed about 6 or 7 more!! So, I went out and bought 2 instead. There was only 3 hangers in the wardrobe and only 3 small drawers for clothing, so if u were staying a week, u would struggle. Hotel is very stretched out and our room was on the second floor, which was about as far away from reception as u could get even though I walk with a stick. Lift was very confusing as the numbers in the lift were from 2-4 meaning 3 was ground level and 4 was floor 2 🤦‍♀️ Parking was very limited especially when there were events (weddings I think) were on. Plus point (for the one star I awarded) was for the shower, which was good, although over a bath which is an issue for anyone with disabilities like myself. However that wasn't the hotels fault, my hubby should of mentioned I was partially disabled when booking. Food was also good, although overpriced (I'm my opinion) at £18.95 for a chicken dish. Lastly our room key (card) kept failing. Every couple of uses the card wouldn't open the door so we had to trail to reception to get the cards recharged, big pain! Note to self: next time we're going away, I'll book it 😂

It's ok to be just ok

Positives... Food was great, General staff Couldn't do enough Negatives: room 510, I honestly think it was last decorated in 1510! All the furniture is chipped/damaged, the arms of the chair have holes in, the bath is mouldy and the laundry delivery outside my window at 8am on a Sunday was super fun! Also the giant crack in the sink and the writing on the mirror (in steam) were slightly disturbing features of the bathroom It's a pity the luxury of the spa directly below or the pleasent nature of group dining room wasn't reflected in the room! Breakfast was ample and delicious, it was nice to go some where, and the pastries were actually warm! However the lady doing the resupplies could learn her Ps&Q's a little as "coming through" or "move out the way" isn't quite the atmosphere you appreciate first thing (we left the kids behind to avoid that attitude at breakfast) Overall a... 'memorable' stay

Enjoyable stay with lovely rooms, views and fab food!

I stayed here recently whilst working in Sheffield and couldn’t fault the hotel. The staff were friendly, helpful and made my stay a pleasant one. My room was very large and modern with a lovely view over the lake and gardens. Hard to believe you are in a city! Would recommend eating in the restaurant as menu was great but also enjoyed my room service one night too. Thanks for a great stay, I hope to come back one day soon, perhaps with my family rather than for work.

It's been three years since I last visited this hotel which is a grear location for my office location and has free parking sadly I think this will be my last visit to this hotel. Like many reviews state, the hotel is very dated. My room was very basic, bathroom was tired, lots of cracked and dirty silicone, low water pressure, extremely noisy pipes. My room had two single beds which whilst clean were super soft and uncomfortable. The hotel have now switched to a policy of not making up the rooms on a daily basis claiming it;s for environmental concerns. I did ask at reception about this and was told that they would be happy to make up the room however on return that night nothing had changed. Breakfast was very poor, watered down juice, luke warm watery scrambled egg and a limited selection of danish / criosants. I did have a fresh omlette one day but this wasn't great.

Average and overpriced

Stopped for one night. Room was cold because the windows are old wooden ones and don't shut very well so there was a draught. Asked reception for a plug in heater to compensate which they did. Cobwebs hanging from ceiling so cleaning wasn't up to much. Bathroom looked tired and heated towel rail didn't work. Bed was comfy so slept fine but won't be rushing back. We usually use the Mercure at St Paul's which is much nicer and similar price with better facilities.
