THE WORST HOTEL I HAVE EVER BEEN

The worst experience ever in a hotel 1. The nearby area smells to pee all day and night 2. Front desk people unable to solve any issue 3, dirty dirty dirty place Floor was never cleaned in a 6 days long period bathroom not cleaned ever Bed sheets was never changed 4. Air conditioning noisy and flooded the room all time including the clothes 5. Not Service room The day before check out ( apparent a policy)

48 hours in Rio

Stayed here for a couple of nights in February during a nine-day trip to Brazil. We arrived around 4pm on a Saturday afternoon, and despite a quiet reception area it took a while to be checked in owing to a faulty printer. Once checked-in we went to our room which was on the fourth floor and overlooked Rua Souza Lima rather than Copacabana itself. The room was spacious with a large comfortable bed and ample clothes storage space. There was also a safe which unfortunately did not work, so we kept our valuables in locked suitcases. The room also had a fridge, good quality TV and a Nespresso machine, which again was not working during our stay (though if it did we would have been charged for the coffee pods). The bathroom was also spacious and well maintained, with a powerful shower. Breakfast was in a room with views over Copacabana, and we were impressed by the choice and quality of the hot and cold options available. The hotel also has a roof top bar and pool on the 13th and 14th floors, and these both give the chance to see all of Copacabana and sights further afield. The hotel is well located- in addition to being on Copacabana, it is also a short walk to Ipanema and its beach and other attractions. There are also a wide of range of bars, restaurants and shops within walking distance. Given its location close to the beach there was quite of bit of noise from outside, but this generally subsided by midnight. After our stay in Rio we were visiting Buzios, and before arriving in Brazil had booked a transfer from the hotel. However there had been some confusion and the transfer thought we required collection instead from Santos Dumont airport. We then decided to look for alternatives and asked Derek at the hotel reception for assistance- he was very helpful and found us a transfer with another company. In the end we decided to book an Uber for the journey, but we did really appreciate his help. On the day we left for Buzios we were able to use the hotel gym and spa to have a shower before our journey. This was particularly welcome as it turned out this was the hottest day in Rio for ten years, and we were feeling rather hot! Overall we were pleased with our stay- the hotel is slightly dated and we had a few issues with the broken safe and Nespresso machine, but the location pretty much made up for this. For a brief visit to Rio it is a very useful base for seeing the city.

Grand Mercure Copacabana

This is not a 5 stars hotel. - The building: to me it looks like it used to be a small hotel (facing Av Atlantica) that at some point bought an adjacent building (on R Souza Lima). Why? Because although it's a relatively small place, there are at least two separate building blocks. One has the bar, the restaurant, the rooftop pool and spacious elevators. The other is just a block of rooms with a couple of small elevators. We were staying in this second building, so if we wanted to go to the pool, we needed to take the elevator 13 floors down, walk to the other side of the hotel and ride another elevator 13 floors up. The lobby is small, so it's usually crammed with people. The entrance HAS NO ramp, so good luck if you are on a wheel chair or carrying heavy luggage. - The room: having stayed in Grand Mercure Ibirapuera, this was a clear downgrade. The most obvious is the old, incredibly noisy AC (unusual for even a 4-star hotel). Additionally the bathroom had no window. If you are staying 30 meters from the beach, chances are you are going to get back with wet clothes. Good luck getting them dry! - Beach Service: this is probably the one thing the hotel has going for itself. On top of offering towels to take with you to the beach (you have to ask for them in the lobby), the closest barraça will recognize the towels and offer you free beach chairs and umbrella.

Good hotel in great location

I recently stayed at this hotel when in Rio for a couple of days. The location is great, opposite the beach and close by to restaurants and supermarkets. The room was spacious and comfortable and the breakfast was very good. The one area that let the hotel down was the reception, as the desk is quite small and there was a long line of people waiting - perhaps I was just unlucky as a bus group was leaving when I was needing to leave? The door staff were also then occupied with the bus, which meant there was no-one to assist taking my bags down the stairs.

We appreciate very much your comments and are happy to have made your stay pleasant. We also apologize your experience at the Front Desk. We hope to have the opportunity to welcome you again to our Brazilian house with a Carioca soul for a more welcoming experience.

Rooms are comfortable but not luxurious. Great breakfast and roof terrace bar which gives views over Copacabana. Pool is small but good to have and sunbathe by. Very modern Gym with a lot of equipment again with views of the beach. Staff were very helpful and provided the few things we needed for our room. Beach towels are provided for the beach at reception. Good location on Copacabana and not far to walk round to Ipanema.
