Wonderful family spot outside Marrakech

This was our first time to this hotel just outside the city of Marrakech. The Fairmont Royal Palm was about 20 mins from the airport, a taxi from the airport was 310 MAD, bookable at a kiosk just outside the airport arrivals. On arrival at the hotel you could see why it was 5 stars and expensive. The buildings and grounds were exceptional with the gardens and main pool looking out over a gorgeous looking golf course and the Atlas Mountains. Our room was a Mountain View Junior Suite and we were upgraded from a garden view which was a lovely touch. The suite was excellent and we could not fault anything. The cleanliness of our room and the whole hotel was outstanding. We even had senior housekeeping staff check that we were happy with the room and the standard of housekeeping several times during our 7 night stay. All the facilities at the hotel were great and we used the fitness centre everyday. The pool area and gardens were huge, very well maintained and the pool was heated! Breakfast was a very extensive buffet with choice for every palate which we really loved. The waiting staff were lovely too. We went to the bar each evening before dinner for cocktails, superbly made by Zouhair, a cocktail master. Overall, I would thoroughly recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Morocco and wanting some relaxing time outside of Marrakech. The staff were exceptional, both friendly, professional and gave us great service. The only way that this hotel could be improved from my point of view would be to have another restaurant for evening dinner as with just 2 places to eat, over 7 days this was a little repetitive. Or,another option would be to add more oriental dishes to the Morrocan Restaurant menu, such as asian. Sushi was served in the main bar which was very popular but not to our tastes.

Wonderful resort! But in spite of lovely staff, service was a big let down

There is no doubt that this is a fantastic resort. If you're sporty, this is definitely the place for you - they have tennis paddle golf, the pool is huge, the grounds are massive and gorgeous. If you're not sporty that's fine too! It's a truly beautiful resort and very clean with lots of different parts to it. The food is very good (especially the sushi at the bar! Who would have thought!). And the bar is lovely with great music. We had a great week here with our 2 kids (warning if you're a couple: there are alot of kids). The hotel was full as it was over Easter but it never felt crowded because it's so well spread out without feeling like a monster resort. The room was also fantastic - we had a garden suite which was superb with the kids. So why 4 stars and not 5... sadly, it was the service that let this place down. But the service, not the staff who were the kindest loveliest people (i think having interacted with 40 over a week, only 3 weren't particularly friendly). Big shout out to Ghizlane and Imane for their warm hospitality! But we did have too many issues with well over half our meals - food being too slow, orders being forgotten, having to walk to waiters because we couldn't get their attention etc . And definitely dont expect your wine being poured for you if its in an ice bucket. Pool service is also very hard to come by, and whilst everything looks clean, I can tell you that clearing up dirty plates etc is a total mission and that dirty towels are left everywhere. Other service which wasn't great was communications with the management in terms of events etc. We had no idea about what was going on in the hotel like their Saturday brunch with camels etc or other events in the 3 restaurants. Not sure if that was just us though. We naturally complained about all of this and the managers were very kind and we had complimentary drinks etc but honestly it came to a point where we just wanted a meal to go smoothly instead of the freebies!! So that was very annoying. I think it was a case of being massively under staffed at peak times. Other point: kids club is good but our friends who come every year say it's gone downhill and their kids didn't enjoy it this year which is a shame (they said it used to be amazing and now average in comparison). Also the kids club for under 3s is a joke. I joked it was a baby prison - very small room; barely any real toys; padded walls in a sterile environment with no sunlight. Having said all of this, I would recommend this place for families. And I think we would come back again. But it would be really for our kids, as the service was too much of a let down especially when you're on holiday!
