Disappointed by the lack of empathy and flexibility

I booked a room at Ibis Budget Amsterdam City South well in advance, but unfortunately, due to unforeseen personal circumstances, I had to cancel. I was fully aware that the rate was non-refundable, but I contacted the hotel two weeks ahead of the check-in date, kindly requesting a gesture of goodwill — either a full refund or a voucher. The response was cold and completely lacking in empathy. Despite the situation being explained clearly, the hotel simply repeated the cancellation policy, with no consideration for the guest's circumstances. I followed up politely, but the answer remained the same — as if the customer experience stopped the moment the payment was processed. I also had bookings with other hotel chains on the same trip — also under non-refundable rates — and both Radisson and Hyatt handled the situation with empathy, offering refunds or future credit. I am truly disappointed by the way I was treated. Often, small gestures make a huge difference in how we perceive a brand. In this case, the lack of flexibility showed that the hotel values rules over relationships. I hope this review helps future guests realize that customer care and human consideration are just as important as facilities and location — especially when the unexpected happens.

Basic but clean

The best thing about this hotel is the closeness to the tram station. Rooms are small, basic but clean. Most of the staff are friendly but one, Mr Grumpy the bun as we called him! They only serve breakfast which is basic too! Some great restaurants 10 min walk away and worth a visit.

Hotel is basic. Rooms small but clean throughout. Powerful shower. Combined body / hair wash provided. Towels provided. No hairdryer. Close transport links into the centre. Super easy to get about. Travel pass for the tram, train, metro and bus purchased for £36 covering 3 days. Not much to do around the hotel but fine for a base. Would recommend if you’re looking for somewhere further out, cheap but clean to stay with easy links to the centre.

For a basic hotel, not bad.Breakfast was fair. However the bathroom does not have a shelf to place toiletries on and there is no toilet brush. Bed was extremely hard and uncomfortable. They forgot to make up our bed last evening and empty our waste basket bin.As there is no phone in the room it was too late to go to reception and complain. Duly in the morning I did explain on check out where a free coffee was offered. Quite expensive over all.

Good accommodation, small room but tidy. Towels were changed everyday. Breakfast very tasty, but there were not hot meals e.g. sausage, scrambled eggs.
