A surprise around every corner

What an incredible surprise here at SO/ Auckland. From the moment we arrived, we were blown away with the art deco featured within the hotel. The warm fresh vibes keeping to its historic feel dating back to the Reserve Bank of New Zealand era, this hotel provided a sense of excitement (and surprises) from the moment we arrived. We were welcomed to the hotel by a young lady who was helpful and attentive. Really felt great hospitality here. The bellman arranged to have our bags taken to our room and we were shown around the property. Surprised to learn about a lounge containing afternoon canapés and evening beverages was the first of many surprises. Our room was on level 10, featured a seperate living area, bedroom and very fancy bathroom including a bath and seperate shower. The gym - absolutely stunning including pool, spa, sauna and very well equipped gym. After 10 days of travelling, I spent two hours here and did not get bored. The gyms atmosphere was neat and felt very spaced out unlike a previous gym experienced earlier in the week. Breakfast was stunning, and included a fresh orange juice maker in addition to a regular juicer with other fresh fruits and vegetables. The live egg station was great and poached eggs cooked perfectly. What was even better, the restaurant is located on level 15, overlooking the Harbour. Evening canapés included cheeses, hot selections, wines and beers and outdone other hotels within the same category. Honestly I wish we were here a lot longer than a night, as we have unfinished business!!! Such a great hotel and look forward to our next stay. Thank you SO/ Auckland for delivering such amazing hospitality for my husband’s 50th.

I rarely leave negative reviews, but my experience with SO/ Auckland deserves to be shared. I left a medically-necessary orthodontic retainer by the sink in my room. I realized immediately and contacted the hotel less than 24 hours after checkout. Despite the extremely short timeframe and the item being in plain sight, I was told housekeeping “couldn’t find it.” Realistically, it was thrown away. What disappointed me most wasn’t the loss — mistakes happen — but how the hotel handled it: • No urgency in retrieving the item • Slow, repetitive communication with no real follow-up • No accountability from housekeeping • No goodwill gesture or support, just a copy-paste “policy” response This falls short of the standard of service expected from a 5-star hotel. An item reported within 24 hours should not be thrown away with no responsibility acknowledged. The experience left a bad impression, and I hope management seriously reviews their lost-and-found procedures so other travelers don’t end up in the same situation.

A wonderful retreat

The staff was very professional and very helpful. Our room overlooked the harbor and was amazing. The location was convenient to shopping, touring, and restaurants. Earplugs were furnished if you needed them for the street noise. We didn't need them. The room was immaculate.

Interesting hotel

We stayed here for 3 nights while in Auckland. The staff were lovely. Breakfast was nice with many options and the breakfast staff were fantastic at catering for specific requests. We didn’t particularly like the style of the rooms but that is just a personal opinion. The rooms were clean with a good shower. The location was good - about a 10 minute walk from the marina and all the restaurants and literally opposite the Giapo ice cream shop!
