Unfortunately I had no choice but to stay here when away on business but if you have a choice AVOID! The staff are nice but the hotel is very run down, has no air con, windows in rooms are broken so don’t close, there’s so much noise from local establishments and the hotel until late at night and very early in the morning, takes ages to get served a drink at the bar when the bar is empty, rooms are not sound proof at all - you hear everything!! And it’s not even that cheap to stay here. AVOID!

Terrible hotel to stay in . Rooms are filthy and it’s very noisy . If you want a drink you have to wait ages for someone to come and serve you . Very disappointed.Old fashioned and needs refurbishing net curtains are dirty and cobwebs everywhere.

We booked the Mercure in Darlington as we had a friends wedding in Barnard Castle. The hotel itself was clean and staff were friendly. We had a complimentary upgrade which was a great bonus, especially as we were staying for 3 days and definitely needed the fridge (thank you for this extra team - it was greatly appreciated). When we arrived to our room unfortunately, there wasn’t a cot in the room as requested however, Evie on reception ensured that a cot was swiftly brought up to our room in time for our little one’s bedtime. Thank you for this Evie! We saw that you were working alone on the desk and definitely didn’t think we would have received the cot as quick as we did:) We had breakfast on the first morning and was cooked well. My husband is a chef and just said that he would have liked to see more continental options. Overall a wonderful stay and is central to everything we needed with a 10-15 minute walk from Darlington train station and a 20-30 minute taxi ride to Barnard Castle. We hope to revisit soon!

I travel to Darlington on a regular basis but try to avoid this hotel. The noise from the street below such as burglar alarms, deliveries, church bells, noise pubs as well as plenty of noise from people on the street below make it impossible to have the window open leaving you with a room that is too hot as there is no air conditioning. Not much insulation between the bedroom walls either as I could hear the room next door all night. My TV fell off the wall and the bathroom shower leaked all over the floor. Clearly this was a long term issue as the poor condition of the bathroom door & frame was shocking. Hot & cold issues with the shower. An evening meal of 'mac & cheese' was as soggy as the wood in the bathroom & breakfast equally unappealing. The bar at the front of the hotel was being redecorated with a sign saying it would be reopened at 4.30pm however the decorator continued to work until 6.30pm with his rolls of wallpaper spread around the bar.

The room i am sorry that Tv and water was a issue and the standard of the room , we have discovered a problem with the water temp and this has now been rectified. we are a town centre hotel so will get noise from the areas outside. The bar area was supposed to open at 4.30pm but the decorator got delayed so worked later to try and get the bar area completed Sincerely, Management

Huge thanks to Maria, Carl, Alex and Stacy. We arrived with a couple of challenges, but nothing that these wonderful people couldn’t solve for us Including….giving us somewhere to meet family we haven’t seen for 30 years, because the cafe here is being refurbished Absolutely awesome hotel and people Thank you all. Would completely recommend 120%
