Stayed just one night (thank goodness). For a "dog friendly" hotel...It isn't. If you take a dog, you have. to have dinner/breakfast in the bar area. This isn't such an issue only that there were absolutely no staff around. At breakfast you have to leave the dog in the bar area, walk through to the restaurant to collect your food and then take it back to the bar area. We even had to collect cutlery and crockery, again from the restaurant back to the bar. In the 45 minutes we had breakfast, no staff were seen! The lobby area of the hotel is well furnished/decorated. As soon as you leave the rest of the hotel is in need of a renovation. Stained carpets throughout and very dated rooms. The staff we encountered were friendly but evidently not trained in dealing with the public.

Comfortable,lovely staff, but poor breakfast

There are some great things about this hotel. The staff were lovely, our room was spotlessly clean and huge. The bed and bedding was very comfortable. The location made it easy to get into York by bus or Uber. But the breakfast was below average on both mornings. The cooked items had been out way too long, the fruit salad was going brown, and there were no croissants on either morning. And the fruit bowl - a sad basket of old apples and pears that looked as though they had been there for weeks. The building is old and the room furniture and bathroom needs a refurb. But it was clean and comfortable. Probably I would stay again, but skip the breakfast.

This hotel is ok just outside the centre of York , so a taxi is needed. Arrived at the hotel and had to wait nearly 15 minutes as there was no one on reception. When he eventually turned up, he apologised, saying he had to deal with something upstairs. The reception and bar area have clearly had an upgrade as they were nice. Our room on the other hand was shabby. Very grubby wallpaper. Cabinets badly scratched . No edging on the bedside cabinets. Curtains not fixed properly. Handles changed on wardrobe were smaller than previous ones so looked tacky. Really poor sealant in bathroom. Only one dressing gown in wardrobe for 2 people. On a plus the room was warm and beds were comfortable, but dont use the floorstanding fan as it is too noisy. Staff were very polite that we saw but didn't seem many of them for a large hotel. Breakfast was very good , buffet style with a good choice and the cooked produce was good quality.
