Good room, nice food

Two of us stayed for a weekend break near York at this hotel. It’s close to a Park & Ride so easy to get into the city centre. There is also an hourly bus about 100 yards from the hotel entrance that will take you into the city centre. Our room was comfortable, clean and tidy. Food in the restaurant was very good with a wide selection for breakfast and a varied menu for dinner. The staff were very helpful, smiling and well informed. We had a slight hiccup at the bar in that we had to pay for each order by card rather than add the bill to our room bill. I asked for two whiskies and got a double in one glass; I also asked for a sparkling water and lime and got sparkling water and a slice of lime (not lime juice) and when I asked for a bottle of wine, I had to ask for someone to open it (I don’t carry a corkscrew in my pocket) In summary, nice room, nice food, pleasant staff but a few niggles in the bar.

In a function the serving staff are very slow clearing plates between courses.

A lot has been said about the rooms so I will leave my comments to one side, except to say I could not remove the bath plug and left the room with water still in the bath! Attended a function of 100 people, dinner dance. The food was great no complaints there but the serve between course was incredibly slow. In the end, I had to hunt for the waiting staff to remove the plates. There did not seem to be anyone in charge, or to take control of the situation. The staff themselves were lovely but they need that one person to take control and keep things moving. !

Fairfield Manor

Stayed at Fairfield Manor for an event, the hotel itself looks very inviting as you walk in the lobby. The decoration is lovely and gives an air of quality. The downside: The room we stayed in was clean but very shabby, the window wouldn't lock. The bed though large and comfortable had a very old fashioned headboard with fitted bedside lamps that hung directly over your head as the headboard clearly was for a double and the bed was a super king. There was a smaller bed next to this which could have been put away as we did not need this and it was very close to the side of the bed with sharp fitments exposed, we used one of the bath towels to cover this. The decoration was grubby and looked like it had not seen a lick of paint in many years, the wardrobe had a musty smell and was missing the handle to open it. Food in the restaurant was not bad though, but the bar prices are ridiculously expensive. We had forgotten a couple of small items, there is a sign in the room that states you can ask reception for things like vanity packs etc, when we asked at reception we were rudely told they do not provide these things, despite saying they do. If you forget anything expect to go and find a shop.

NOT Dog Friendly.

Stayed just one night (thank goodness). For a "dog friendly" hotel...It isn't. If you take a dog, you have. to have dinner/breakfast in the bar area. This isn't such an issue only that there were absolutely no staff around. At breakfast you have to leave the dog in the bar area, walk through to the restaurant to collect your food and then take it back to the bar area. We even had to collect cutlery and crockery, again from the restaurant back to the bar. In the 45 minutes we had breakfast, no staff were seen! The lobby area of the hotel is well furnished/decorated. As soon as you leave the rest of the hotel is in need of a renovation. Stained carpets throughout and very dated rooms. The staff we encountered were friendly but evidently not trained in dealing with the public.
