We booked a Superior Suite to celebrate my birthday, it wasn't superior in any way. Quite dirty, sticky glass rings on glass area by bedside, bed not made properly, hospitality tray not properly stocked. The bathroom sink was discoloured and the dreaded shower over the bath combo, the shower head so low you couldn't get under it to wash properly. The carpets in several areas of the hotel were dirty, some with bits of rubbish on the floor. Prior to booking we realised the dinner offerings were very basic but had seen a few items on the online menu that would do us, but were not offered on the night. The food was pub food but poor quality and badly cooked, I think the cook must be a school child, judging by the food we were served! I could not eat anything except a bread roll, there were only a few other diners and a few people in the lounge. There was absolutely no ambience, I felt like I had spent a night in a retirement home for my birthday. Breakfast was served plated due to so few patrons, it was poor quality and again badly cooked. Salty bacon cold, hard and full of salt scum, sausage not cooked properly, hash browns you could use as a weapon. The best part of my birthday stay was driving out of the carpark, the only positive, the staff were all lovely people.

We held out wedding here 31st August. From day 1 of our visit 2 years ago, Vicky and Chelsea (wedding team) were flawless. Helping make our day complete with any extra bits required. The day itself ran flawlessly thanks to Rachel who had the day running like clockwork! The guests commented what a gorgeous venue it was and how welcoming and helpful the staff were. The food from wedding breakfast to morning breast was delicious and varied. Thanks to all at Bowden for making our day extra special!

A classy and welcoming hotel

As soon as we arrived at the hotel we knew it would be good. The very kind receptionist made us so welcome and on realising that my sister had disabilities, she changed our room on the top floor to one on the first. There is no lift. I don't know her name but she was blonde and possibly Slovenian. Thank you!! The room was lovely and looked out over the beautiful grounds. My only niggle was that I couldn't open the bathroom window. It was a very hot weekend too. The hotel is quite old-fashioned and I really like it. Classy throughout and charming. All the staff were extremely friendly and helpful. The bar area is really nice and we had pre-meal drinks in the outside seating area which is really pleasant. The restaurant is very attractive and airy. The food is superb. We enjoyed a steak on our second evening. Not cheap but absolutely amazing. It came with a delicious sauce. Breakfast is wonderful. There is everything you could possibly want......and you could eat as much as you liked. The coffee comes from a machine and initially I was worried that it wouldn't be up to much. I was wrong. It's excellent. Considering how near to the motorway the hotel is located, it is pleasantly quiet. There's a large car park right next to the hotel which is great. We were very impressed with the hotel and will definitely be returning.

Ignore the poor reviews. We stayed over en route to Cornwall. Staff (there were loads of them) couldn't do enough. Dogs were welcomed and played with, water bowl provided in room. Spotless. Mattresses so comfy and clean as was the whole room and bathroom. Breakfast was a huge choice and had three buffets with lots of staff to hand. Bar meals were a bit expensive. No lift. Dogs not allowed in restaurant but allowed in lounge next door - that room needs more dining height tables in it because of that rule. Grounds were beautiful and dogs could be exercised there. We were on the end wing and could use a fire door to take dogs out for a quicker exit. Bathrooms - always prefer a shower enclosure in hotels but this had bath with shower over. Very peaceful and relaxed place. There was a wedding on but the noise could not be heard within the main hotel. Thanks for a lovely stay.

10 of us came here for a 65th wedding Anniversary in the garden pods. First. Pods not very clean lots of dead flys etc. No lake view. Food was very poor, Ive had better food at a wethersppons. At 35 pounds a head very poor. The waitresses and waiter were very good. Wouldn't return.
