Earnest staff but standards fall short

Bathroom had little hairs on the floor; which was bad form especially as the hotel was trying to be COVID safe. A tray stacked with dirty, smelly dishes - with a loo brush on TOP of the pile - sat in the corridor for two days. Breakfast offering of a packaged baguette was unsealed when it should have been sealed.

The best asset of this hotel is its location and the view on the cathedral and breakfast variety, although the coffee was not great. This is a pretty old hotel that deserves refurbishing and/or maintenance. Heating was not working and I had to use a mobile heater which is not comfortable at all. Shower water was not warm enough. Large bed is actually two small bed combined and not firm mattress (some people may like it this way though).

Check in was lovely and smooth and after returning from shopping in the city there was a birthday treat waiting in my room. Kian on reception was friendly, welcoming and professional. Can't wait to stay again.

Well located but very tired rooms

Great location which is why we stay two or three times a year near to family. Unfortunately, most long-time staff seem to have changed, and rooms are now very tired. Our room (Privilege, so in theory the top tier) had a heating system which did not work, a plug-in heater with withstand broken leg, a nightstand socket that was coming off the wall, a bedside lamp that was leaning perilously, and an empty fridge (not restocked on first day despite it being part of the room - not an issue for us as we had paid only for an executive room, and it was restocked the next day).

Mercure Wessex Hotel in Winchester

Mercure managed to commit two breaches of the Data Protection Act with my personal data and that of the other guests staying the weekend before we even arrived The hotel is tired as is its decor and fittings - The fire alarm went off 3 times on the Saturday due to a smoke machine at a Wedding disco and the staff seemed unable to manage the situation effectively The breakfast buffet was not kept restocked and the sight of a member of staff in lounge wear, no socks and casual shoes on the Monday morning taking hot food orders was straight out of Fawlty Towers Our room was not cleaned or the bed made up on the Saturday

Not as good as it used to be

This hotel has deteriorated over the past few years. It used to be much better before. The food & drinks selection is reduced, the beds and pillows are very hard and worst of all the water pressure in the bathrooms is non-existent. Had to have a shower with a trickle of water. Management needs improvement for sure.

Stuck in lift

Great location, excellent room and facilities, BUT.... we were stuck in the lift a few inches above the ground floor(immediately after it had been serviced and the staff didn't know what to do. The lift service man couldn't come back for 25 minutes, so eventually the Fire Brigade came and managed to open the doors. It was disappointing that there was little in the way of an apology, nor any offer of some form of compensation. Otherwise all was fine.

Not very good 3 Rooms in 4 nights Dust cart loading 4.30 in the morning 4 Times until 5.15 ROOM 1 Room 2 Knocking sound from heating + Sink would not drain Room 3 Toilet did not flush first time & took over 4 min to re-fill low water pressure parking very bad cost £48

good centrally located hotel,ideal for Xmas market & shopping as well as Museums. Staff friendly .,Arrived early , requested permission to park up all satisfactory. .Went for a walk .room not ready when we returned , not a problem as onlt 2pm , we were given drinks voucher & enjoyed free drinks in bar area.Checked in later 7 went to Cathedral & Market right next door. Room a little cold ...

Extremely Poor Parking Facilites, Dining & Room Quality

Parking - a joke, no disabled, spaces limited and obscured almost impossible to park. Reception Staff - unhelpful No evening dining - advised by staff there would be a long wait and would have to eat in bar area. Room - had to upgrade to a Privilege Room and pay £20 per night extra to get a walk in shower. Towels extremely small very thin and scratchy. Water pressure extremely poor. Large red stain on carpet. TV channels very limited. Breakfast - very good. A great selection buffet style with very friendly and helpful staff. Only chose this hotel due to it's location. Overall not what you would expect from a 4 star hotel

The best thing about the hotel is its situation just a few yards from the cathedral and the main street. The room was comfortable and the hotel breakfast was generous and provided plenty of choice. I'd recommend it to anyone.

Hotel was clean and comfortable although some of the friends we were travelling with had smaller rooms and beds. The decor etc is a bit tired. Staff were very helpful. Good breakfast choice and regularly refreshed.

Ok. Where to start. Love the location of the hotel. Very, very convenient for Winchester. The staff were good. What spoils this hotel is it's maintenance. The carpets could be better. The passageway to our room had a missing/broken ceiling tile. The carpets in the breakfast room held together by tape. The carpark support badly/dangerously damaged. Why do hotels always vacuum in the checkout period of time? The time for this is between checkout and checkin? Saves falling over the wires?

What an amazing town....a must see for everybody...our accommodation at the Mercure was perfect..the staff were accommodating..friendly...the room was e excellent...pillows a joy to put my head on..the bed wonderful.... breakfast was delicious....l cannot speak highly enough of this hotel...thank you for a great stay.

Mecure not up to Australian Mecure standard

This hotel is tired and dated. The overall quality of the room was not up to the standard we usually get and expect from an Australian Mecure brand hotel. The room smelt musty and the double bed was actually two singles pushed together. The bed was hard and it also meant that there was a hard edge in the middle of the bed where the two beds met. The bedding did not fit the bed properly and the fitted sheet kept coming off. We did have a nice view of the cathedral as this was allegedly a Mecure Privilege room - I'm glad we didn't have a standard room, I'd hate to think what that was like. I am also glad it was just for one night as I could not have stood staying there longer. There was also a gaping hole in the ceiling of our corridor with electric cables showing - it looked like water damage had happened. However, this hole could have been temporarily covered with boarding to at least make it look better - I took a photo of it as I was just amazed that it could be left like that! A plus is the location of the hotel which is in the city centre and makes it easily accessible for shopping, restaurants and the theatre. However, there is a Travel Lodge just across the road from this hotel and that may have been a better bet.

Nice location

I would not have made a booking to stay in this hotel if I had seen an external view of the building. It is a most unappealing appearance. That said the internals were much better than the external appearance although the hotel in parts appeared to be tired and in need of a revamp. Our room was very nice with a superb view of Winchester Cathedral as it was right outside the window. Although you would think this would be a quiet location there was noisy local residents up and about early the next morning. I would possibly stay there again if a good deal was on offer otherwise I would definitely book elsewhere. Excellent location it has to be said for visiting Winchester. I think the cost of the car park should be made more obvious when booking or considering booking.

Good location

A good stay in an hotel we know well but it is beginning to look very tired and could do with an overall refurbishment. Parking can be a problem although this time we came by train. Facilities in general were not as good as previously. i.e. no biscuits, no restaurant evening meals. some confusion over our booking at reception but this was quickly sorted.

Stayed here the night before a 15 mile walk, so was keen to get a good nights sleep. Room looked like something from the 1970's, very tired decor / styling, a bit dusty but overall reasonably clean and spacious but stiflingly hot. There was a fan, but this resulted in just warm air being blown about the place. Headed out for dinner, lots of good local options, came back for sleep only to find local Pitcher and Piano was banging out loud tunes until 2am. Couldn't close the window as it already felt like a sauna (FYI weather was not super hot, just a standard British Summer day), so not the best nights sleep. Onto breakfast, again, very average, typical buffet style, not bad, but certainly not great. Staff helpful, but overall an underwhelming experience for what was supposed to be a 4 star property.

Warm at Winchester

Arriving at the hotel on one of the warmest days of the year, we were disappointed to discover that the air-conditioning was not working. Although the room was large and well-appointed, a small fan struggled to keep the temperature bearable. However, the staff were helpful and very friendly and without the above problem we would have rated the hotel much higher.
