I recently stayed at Novotel Rotorua for the first time, having previously stayed at Pullman properties, and I am honestly shocked at how much difference half a star can make. Based on my experience, this property should be downgraded to two stars—and that is being generous. The entryway was the best part of the stay. Unfortunately, everything declined from there. Check-in involved long wait times, and even after the official check-in time, our room was still not ready. While I understand it was a busy time of year, that does not excuse the condition of the room we were eventually given. The carpets were bubbling, extremely worn, and in a rundown state. In fact, I cut my toe on a sharp nail protruding from the carpet—something that should be absolutely unheard of in any hotel, let alone one operating under Accor standards. While I was thankful that the bedding was clean, that is where the positives ended. The air conditioning was blasting to the point that we had to move tables several times during breakfast just to find a comfortable spot. Breakfast itself was very underwhelming and did not resemble what is advertised in the website gallery. The fruit was not up to standard, and the overall display was disappointing. The most concerning part of the stay occurred at the egg station. I witnessed a mishap involving a guest’s eggs, and instead of the chef rectifying the situation in a clean and professional manner, the guest picked the egg up with their bare hands off the hash browns. Nothing further was done to address the obvious cross-contamination or the fact that food was handled by hand. This was genuinely shocking and unhygienic. Please do not offer me a complimentary or “better” stay—I will not be returning. I am deeply disappointed that I spent both points and money on this experience. The hotel is clearly in need of a serious upgrade, which is unfortunate given its good location. To add to my frustration, I had initially attempted to book the Pullman instead, but due to poor English comprehension by staff during my phone call, I was unable to complete my booking effectively. Overall, Accor standards appear to have dropped significantly across New Zealand, and this stay has left a very poor impression.

The room was large and nicely appointed. There were electrical outlets on both sides of the bed. The view of the lake as fabulous. The bed was quite comfortable. Bathroom lighting was good. First and foremost, the front desk staff neglected to answer our calls twice in anything near a reasonable amount of time. We called twice. The first time was to ask if they had neglected to put a floor lamp in our room. There was overhead lighting only in the entry and bathroom. There were spotlights at each side of the bed and one on the desk. The lighting in the room was entirely inadequate at night. The second call was because our room had not been made up. More urgently, though, our towels were on the floor and we needed new towels to get ready for an event. It took forever to reach a person at the front desk, then for them to have housekeeping deliver the towels. We did leave the hanger on the door letting them know they could make up the room. The hanger had some complicated message about us being out so the room is available. I suspect that staff confused it with the other complicated message that we love the room so much we're in it. Whatever the reason, the staff's timely responsiveness to guests was dismal. Finally, the room was long overdue for a refresh.

Check in was busy, everyone was queing in the priority lane. Lady staff member was lovely. Checked in just after 3pm & she said rooms aren't ready and they will call when rooms are free. We waited about an hour & came back. Rooms were ready. My door was broken & it took another 40 mins to get access. No welcome note or goodies to either room. Window was broken so the wind was coming in all night & it was a rough windy night. Toilet didn't flush properly, & after each one it did a piercing sound for about 13 seconds. Shower pressure was amazing. Chocolate stains on couch - I did manage to get some of it out (I was curious to what it was). Breakfast was a shambles. They ran out of food, tables were left with dirty dishes etc. Was not pleasant to go around. Asked for a suite to upgrade to when checking in & they said they didn't have suites (yet the website said they did & it was available). I usually stay at the Pullman when I come down. I will go back to them.
