I found this hotel after arriving in Chiang Ma at 11pm and realizing that I had accidentally booked my original hotel for the day following my arrival and that original hotel was fully booked for the night I arrived. I desperately called nearby hotels, with the Mercure having a room available for that night. The best thing about the hotel was Tara, the absolutely wonderful late shift front desk associate who got me squared away with a room immediately. She is extremely warm, polite, and her English is fantastic. If you check in later in the evening, please give her a warm hello, because she is tier one. She is the reason that this particular hotel has a 5 star rating and not a 4. The air conditioning in the hotel rooms was fantastic, if you are not a fan of hot weather, the hotels AC was bar none exceptional. The room service menu was quite limited but everything I ordered from the menu was quite appetizing and of good value. The location is slightly north of the old city but still within a very convenient distance to the old town. My primary dissatisfaction with the hotel were only that there were no towels in my room when I arrived but that was quickly squared away by alerting the hotel staff. The second issue was that the water in the shower was not very hot and that was the only annoyance that was not something that could not be addressed.

I booked the Mercure bc it was cheap so my expectations were not high. After booking I checked some recent reviews and felt a little uneasy bc prior guests had problems with roaches. Still, I was positively surprised throughout my week long stay and would definitely return. First, the staff is super nice. From reception to the breakfast team, everyone goes the extra mile. The breakfast is ok with an egg and noodle soup station, some western and Asian dishes and surprisingly good baked beans. Second, on the roach problem. I did not see any during my week there, so management must have been proactively solving the problem which is a great sign. If you have ever had roaches you know it takes effort to get rid of them. I have stayed in more reputable hotels where they could not get the problem under control. Lastly, the rooms and the hotel are quite old. I didnt mind as I actually like those old school hotels with wood brown furniture. They dont have swipe cards but a key with a chain that you have to insert into a slot to get power. It could double as a weapon. The AC must be military grade as its superpowerful. However, I hardly used it as my room stayed cool by default. Rooms come with WIFI, a kettle, a fridge and a safe. PS: There is no gym, so be aware of that. If you need a cab, ask one of the bellmen and they will call you a grab. It seems impossible to haul one street side. And definitely check out the little eatery next to the Seven Eleven. They make the best Somtam.

This is all but a « Mercure » hotel ! Dark and very old-fashioned hotel which would have needed serious upgrade and improvement but which seems to have remained in its original state. This old building does no longer meet the requirements of the 2021 criteria. The good points: The rooms are spacious, the beds large and comfortable The WIFI is working good. The reception and catering staff is very friendly and dedicated. Really ! The bad points : There is a total lack of soundproofing : you can hear the slightest sound of voices coming from the corridor, the slightest door that closes, the slightest chair that someone makes sliding on the floor ... It is unbearable! If you're unlucky enough to be staying in a communicating bedroom, you can hear the conversation between your neighbors and follow the TV program they watch at. The lighting is very weak, too weak to read at bed. The bathrooms, having no stale air extracting fan, remain wet. The water heater only supplies the shower. It works… or delivers only a lukewarm water! Poor reception of televisions, screens punctuated with white dots all the time. The breakfast (that is not a self service buffet, at least during this Covid period) seems mainly intended for an Asian clientele. You will not find either bacon, yogurt, fruit, or fresh fruit juice. On the program, “Thai style” omelet and very fatty donuts for the Asian part. Eggs, toast, kinds of butter and jam for the continental part.
