On a travel trip with Gate 1 Travel recently. One of the hotels selected on our trip was Mercure Caen Centre in Caen, France. Not having been to this hotel before. I contacted the hotel by email asking if I could have a room on a higher floor. I sent the same request to the two other hotels we were staying at during our trip. The two other hotels honored my request. Upon arrival I was given keys to a room on first floor. The room was very dark. The room itself was below ground level and window which was small was on the floor level of ground. I went immediately to the front desk where the male desk clerk said he couldn’t help me. Luckily our tour guide had a copy of my email request that I had sent the hotel. Another clerk came in and she was able to provide me with a room on the 3rd floor. Which solved the problem. And I may add the female clerk was customer service friendly. If you are staying at this hotel in the future. I suggest that you make sure to avoid the rooms on lower floors and avoid rooms facing the busy streets. As many people on our trip had problems sleeping because of nightlife which the rooms face.

Helpful reception staff comfortable rooms, good breakfast with local produce (U.K. hotels can’t manage this without fleecing its customers) underground car parking. Electric vehicle charging although some non electric cars hogged some of these - maybe bigger signs to warn off other vehicles would be helpful. The hotel is opposite a marina so an attractive setting for an inner city hotel. The centre of Caen is a mixture of old and new as it was subject to a lot of allied bombing. Walkable to restaurants and shops. Everyone in town was very friendly. I would definitely go back. I noticed some reviews complain about the colour of the paint in the rooms. Some people would complain about anything. We had a very enjoyable stay, the beds were comfortable, toiletries - Nuxe Rêve de Miel, which we tried to buy in town but the exact hair and body gel wasn’t available, room safe, large tv, lots of hot water. Lovely.

My parents spent the night of May 10th in this hotel. They were on an organized trip to several French cities. My father had an accident in the room, He suffered a deep cut in a leg after a fall. The reason for this review is to thank the staff for their help. I specially want to thank the girl who provided the first aid in a difficult situation. Sorry they don't remember your name, only that you speaks Spanish. Thanks also for all the support provided until the ambulance arrived.

Clean/friendly & safe overall service- they do not provide full bathroom amenities such as hair shampoo/conditioner nor face towels. I was in with a group tour so there were about 35-40 people. They provided dinner which was served hot and table was decorated very lovely- the food was fine-basic average dinner. The bar and the bar maid were exceptionally helpful. She offered & introduced me to a local spirit cocktail & was pleasant to take my order! Breakfast was very minimal- as the table that I went to sit at had no coffee mugs or silverware- and none were at buffet table. The breakfast served its purpose and was ok. This hotel is so conveniently located to lovely eateries/shopping and entertainment- overall I would be very happy staying there again. The front desk service was also very helpful & offered any assistance possible.

Hotel Theft made us all feel unsafe

Hotel is clean and efficient, however my colleague had her room broken into while we were out at dinner and her bag and laptop were stolen. The Hotel staff were less than helpful, in fact not helpful at all, stating that they couldn’t do anything until the manager returned on Monday morning. They said they had reported the incident to the police, which was untrue as when our party did report the theft the Police had no awareness. I would recommend finding an alternative in Caen or secure all valuables. This incident made us all feel very unsafe.
