Good hotel with a need for upgrades

Pluses: Centrally located; Rooms with view over the Rhône river; Well soundproofed and very clean rooms; 8th floor dining room with great view; Well assorted buffet breakfast; Friendly and helpful staff with special kudos to Valentin Cuq, Concierge. Minuses: Rooms in need of updating. Only one electrical outlet with no USB port; 2 out of 3 elevators out of service during our first four day stay (May 11 to 15, 2024) No soap bars available for 3 days; On our second stay (May 21 to 22) we were assigned a standard room: inside bathroom door handle fell off (promptly repaired) and air conditioning unit was not working; Hotel staff does not respond to emails nor accepted to compensate for inconvenience.

Cannot understand those who have given high marks to this rundown hotel... we will not choose it again when visiting Lyon. It is not that is a bad five star, it is that it's an acceptable three star. The facilities are worn. The decor is 20 years out of date. The room that serves as breakfast, lunch and dinner venue is far too small and unsuited. Our room on the seventh floor had a view of the Rhone flawed by quite dirty windows. The cupboard and closet space was quite limited. Again, perfectly fine three star. Just not better.

Positive: Excellent staff, very friendly, very helpful. Negative: Sadly, everything else. The hotel is showing its age. The rooms are showing significant wear and tear, have poor lighting, uncomfortable beds and generally extremely poor value for money. The breakfast is nothing special, very average quality.

We cam for the rugby and my wife is. Currently disabled. The concierge team Sebastian paul8be kara were as good as it gets. Helpful and intelligent. Well done for a complex rugby job. Eslene was polite and helpful with breakfast Our room - get a view of the rhone- was spacious and comfortable. Altogether a great hotel experience.

Please know that this hotel has not been renovated since it was built in the 1950’s. A staff member told me it was the first Sofitel to open, and will be the last to be renovated. It is a dreadful, dated, decrepid hotel that the Sofitel management should close immediately. I booked it thinking it was, of course, up to the usual Sofitel standard. How unfair to let people think that. Unless it’s the cheapest or only hotel left in Lyon, please do not book this hotel. The staff, however, is excellent.
