I just popped into Darwin for a fishing trip so I wanted a hotel close by. I had a room with a sea view and queen size bed. It was clean, comfortable and had everything that I needed. The hotel has a majestic look from the front but could use a new paint job and freshen up the decor. The colour scheme is from the 1980’s. It has so much potential! The receptionist was friendly and helpful. The swimming pool was nice after a hot day fishing. I would come back.

The location was great. Easy access to Mitchell St & the Mall. It was annoying having 2 keycards to access car park, lift & room. When I booked there was also nothing about paying for parking. That came as a complete surprise.

We have stayed at Mantra on the Esplanade several times, but felt things have gone downhill over the last couple of years. The rooms are looking old and in need of updating, the bathroom especially. It had a terrible smell on arrival and someone had to put something behind a wall, to absorb the smell. After our 2 weeks there, the smell had almost gone. There is no longer any free parking. We parked out on the street, to avoid paying $19 per day. The free parking bays are now allocated to Quality hotels, which is confusing?? Gone are the lovely reception girls that used to be there. They were friendly and welcoming and knew what was happening in Darwin. 1 of the female staff members this time, were not at all welcoming and did not even know that the Mindil Market was reopening, which is a big event with fireworks. There is a sign in the women’s toilets near the pool that shows how to wash your hands with soap etc. Problem was, there was no soap dispenser (missing off wall) or hand towels. It has deteriorated over the years. The restaurant has gone and we keep getting told that it will reopen, but it’s not happening. The lights near the lifts on 7th floor are broken. Only one plug to do, basin, bath and kitchen sink. The outside windows were green with mould and mildew. We love the view and location, which is why we stay there, but it’s expensive and we wonder if it is now worth it.

Room not available at check in. Host completely unempathetic and offered no concession such as secure carparking. Bed was as hard as a rock. We checked out the same day we checked in and went home instead of spending the night in the city.
