Great hotel but veg food limited

Lovely hotel, well located and nice decor. Great that it’s dog friendly. Good buffet breakfast. We found all staff to be great. It’s our second trip in a year and both times we have been particularly impressed by Simarjeet. He advised us so well on local sightseeing and always goes the extra mile. We were so pleased to see that he’s still working here as we returned after 11 months. The only thing I would say is that vegetarian dinner menu is limited. There was risotto which was excluded as my husband doesn’t have mushroom. This only left the margherita pizza which lacked in flavour.

Hotel and rooms were very good and well decorated. Located on the sea front. Service was very friendly. Menu was very limited and food unimaginative and not cooked as per request. Range of drinks not great. Experience doesn't match expectation. Overall, OK but won't return.

Marvellous Mercure

Stayed in a Privilege Sea View room for 2 nights. Room was lovely, bathroom pristine & new, bed was absolutely enormous! Staff were friendly & breakfast was very tasty, with a good selection to choose from. Not that much to do around the hotel other than fun on the slot machines, ice creams & a drink in the couple of pubs nearby. Caught the train into Torquay, only 4 minutes, £19 return for 2. Can't fault the hotel at all.

What should have been a very enjoyable time became less so...

We have just returned from a 2 night stay at the Mercure Hotel, Paugnton. We were there with 2 friends to celebrate a Birthday and a Wedding Anniversary. First impressions were good, and the staff were courteous and helpful at all times. We booked dinner for the first evening. The menu is not extensive and we were surprised and very disappointed to be told that three of the dishes were off, and a fourth had changed from plaice to sea bass. The next morning, I went to reception and explained that before booking the restaurant for the second evening I wanted to know if the menu was complete. The receptionist checked with the head chef and I was assured it was, and I booked a table. You can imagine our second displeasure to discover again the gammon was off, the lamb had become chicken, and the plaice was still sea bass! After dinner, three of us decided to have a digestif. We each ordered a brandy. We then opted for a second round, only to be told that there was only one single measure left. The hotel cellar had completely run out of all brandy. This is outrageous. ,, The rooms were excellent and immaculate. But we were melting, as neither of us, nor the staff were able to reduce the temperature to comfortable levels. Consequently neither us, nor ur friends sleep well. Unfortunately, the benefits of the hotel were significantly outweighed by the unmitigated disasters in the restaurant and bar. Our celebrations with dear friends will be remembered for the wrong reasons.

Should be great but let itself down badly

We were a group of four, celebrating a birthday and and a wedding anniversary. We had many positives about the hotel. It's situation, attractiveness, room quality, breakfast, cleanliness and courteous staff. What should have been a great experience ended up a disappointment, Firstly. The evening restaurant experience for our two nights was very poor. The menu is fairly limited but we told at the table that the gammon, cassoulet and fish chips were off and the fish dish of plaice had been replaced by sea bass, The next morning reception said, after speaking to the head chef, that the kitchen would be restocked and all would be available so we rebooked the restaurant. At the table this time we were told the gammon was still off. The lamb rump dish had now changed to chicken! The plaice was still sea bass, After the meal three of the party had a single brandy. Two of us wanted a second brandy. Only one drink arrived because, we were told, the hotel had totally run out of all types of brandy. This experience is not acceptable. The only message from this is to enjoy the hotel facility but avoid the restaurant in the evening. Secondly. The bedrooms were great but stiflingly hot. I was unable to lower the temperature (23,5C at 6am) despite the heating being turned off. We slept poorly. A member off staff tried but was also unable to make any adjustment to the temperature. There are no opening windows so we had to resort to wedging the door open with a case. We would love to go back but sadly these negative experiences outweigh everything that was good, (and what was good was really good) so we won't be going. Sadly our memories of the Mercure Paignton will all be for the wrong reasons.
