Hotel booked after seeing good reviews on line. Several of us arrived on government contract. Although two of us booked king rooms, one got an accessible room and I got two queens because "they were totally full," which makes me wonder why they booked other people into rooms that were reserved with a specific configuration by us. If you book a king, they should reserve a king for you, right? Could it be that we were on government contract with a lower rate? Hmm..... The hotel itself is nice but very industrial, as a converted bank. Museum downstairs is nice and innovative. It's cool aesthetically but not the coziest with the cold, polished marble/concrete floors in the rooms. Rooms were clean and the beds comfortable, although one of us had an awful "sewer" smell when he checked in--turned out to be probably due to the bathroom sink trap having dried out which allowed the gas to get into the room. Fortunately, after an astute observation by my colleague, issue was fixed by pouring water into the drain, filling the trap and sealing the bad gas out. For some reason, my room had a little couch and cocktail table but no desk, and another colleague had the same thing--not sure if that's standard but probably better for parties than for business travel. It was functional for basic office work/email, but not as good as a nice high back desk chair and true desk as would be necessary if working remotely from the room. Although the downtown Durham area doesn't appear to have fully recovered from the pandemic yet, there are a bunch of nice restaurants, bars, and also a nice 22 mile rail trail about a half mile from the hotel, which we used every day. Overall decent experience, but not quite the vibe we were looking for.

Pretty cool room, very cool art at the hotel. AC didn't work very well and room cleaning wasn't great (some hairs around the bedside tables when we arrived). Really appreciated getting a free upgrade for our special occasion.

Overall the stay was okay, but the daily room maintenance wasn't as professional as one would hope, especially from a boutique hotel. Towels that were replaced by house keeping weren't folded/stacked neatly and trashcans were left in random places after the trash was taken out. The hotel overall is nice, but I would advise to have housekeeping double check their rooms before moving on to the next.

This was by far an amazing hotel experience. The front desk staff was incredibly attentive, the valet was expeditious, and the room was quiet and beautiful. I love Malin and Goetz products and was so excited to see them in the bathroom. I travel every year or so to Durham to visit friends and I will ALWAYS stay here. I also loved the location.

Cool building and renovation. Staff were very good. I liked our king bed room. We had several issues though - a broken iron, water wouldn't drain in the bathroom sink and a door was constantly opening and closing next door to us. Also the key cards did not work well in the elevators and no one explained how to get them to work better. The floors and elevators could have been cleaner. More attention to detail is needed.

We enjoyed our stay at 21C Museum. It is a very interesting hotel with the artwork, decor and exhibits. And the location is perfect! Near all the arts venues and great restaurants. It is kind of hard to figure out where to park and where the entrance is, but when we finally saw the valets, they were VERY helpful. All the staff was very helpful and friendly. Rooms nice with modern decor. We had a great visit to Durham!

Dingy small rooms. Not very clean.

The photos online are nothing like the rooms in reality. The glasses were filthy. There was a large glob of makeup under the window in the bathroom. The a/c was questionable as to whether it was working. No soundproofing to the rooms.

Very disappointed with my stay

The photos and description of 21C didn’t match my experience at all. Our room was dirty first of all. There were layers of dust behind the toilet, on top of the headboard and on the nightstand. The furniture had scuffs all over it. The lighting was odd with both lights that were far too dim and 2 lights that were entirely too bright for comfort. On top of that our view outside was just dingy electrical systems and looking directly into other peoples apartments - so the curtains remained closed. Management was nice about our complaints. Unfortunately there were no other rooms but they were understanding and gave us a discount for the horrible experience. Thankfully we only had to stay for about 12 hours.

My wife and I reserved a room the evening of a scheduled induction for our son. We did not anticipate spending the night, but we wanted to have some relaxing time before his arrival. When we arrived, our room was not ready, which was disappointing. Throughout the process, the staff was very accommodating and empathetic to our situation. When we returned to check-in, we were given our room. When we entered the room, we both wondered where our bed was. As we looked around, we realized the staff had upgraded us to an incredible room. The final night before the birth of our son was spent in an AMAZING room courtesy of the wonderful staff. It made for a memorable beginning to a life filled with joy! Thank you to all who made it happen!

Cold shower...

Shower took an extremely long time to heat up - 30+ minutes. Mentioned to hotel staff upon check out - their response "yeah, I've heard that." Ironically I was in town for a Client Experience conference and this response did not lend for a great experience. I will think twice about booking with this location again.

The check in area was unattractive, the hotel key took over 10 tries to work in the elevator, the double elevators was confusing (when going up from the vault bar area) with no signage guiding you to other elevator, the room was small, the bed too low and uncomfortable, the sheet had a footprint (or maybe a burn from an iron?) on it, the HVAC was loud (requiring earplugs), the sink took 5 minutes to drain when you washed your hands, only two towels, two coffees, no glasses, no robes. For the price of these premium rooms I expected much more. I had to ask for my final invoice when I expect it to be given at checkout. I did like the shower and the blackout shades. Stayed here because the wedding party did but would not stay here again.

The hotel itself definitely had interesting and artistic character. The rooms however are well worn and didn't feel as clean as I would have expected.

Location fantastic. Room not cleaned each day…bed was made but bathroom no addressed…towels left on floor sink not wiped. Also the toilet lid and seat fell off and had to be sat on carefully.

Too many issues with my room. Maintenance fixed all of the issues with my room after 5 r trips to the front desk. This hotel is not luxury hotel and is not what I expect from Sofitel.

Interesting place to stay. Art was interesting. Front desk staff were great. It was a Monday so everything was very quiet. Only wish that I e had been a bit more accessible. Hotel felt a little shut down with restaurant closed and check in at lobby.
