Great hotel could be even greater

First the good, then the complaints. We took suite 228 for eight nights. This is a three room affair, bedroom, living room and bathroom suite. The bedroom has a king size bed with a choice of three kinds of pillow, a large tv, personal reading lamps, a large desk, and pretty good blackout curtains. The view of the road is more interesting than an ocean view. The living room features a sofa which can be made up as a bed, a large closet, a small fridge without a freezer, a safe, and a desk. A door divides the room, and doors allow each room access to the bathroom suite. The bathroom suite also consists of three rooms - a sink area, a toilet room and a shower room, each with a door for privacy. The hotel is amazingly clean, so kudos to the housekeeping department. The front desk is manned by pleasant and knowlegeable staff happy to help out with explanations about the city. There is paid parking right at the entrance, where trained drivers whisk your car into the depths of the earth. We found interesting reading in the little library next to the dining room. Location is everything, and the hotel is two blocks from the lion square and one block from an inexpensive manned laundromat. The comfortable bed and pillow choice plus separate airconditioners in each room are conducive to a very restful stay. I would certainly recommend it to anyone visiting Heraklion. Now some complaints. The only meal we had here was breakfast, which leaves a lot to be desired. Most of the meat was pork - ham and eggs, pork sausage, Canadian bacon, and one type of turkey pastrami. The fried eggs and smashed and fried potatoes were all dripping cooking oil. The only raw vegetables were tomatoes and cucumbers. The cookies were one basic recipe with different colors. The orange juice was bitter. The selection barely varied from day to day. What they need is to hire a much better cook. It is surprisingly easy to lock yourself in the shower, as the magnetic door seal is far too strong. I reached up over the top of the door and pulled it open, while my wife had to bend down to the floor to pry the door open. After that we left it open. The locks on the other doors are too strong so someone has had to stuff toilet paper into the latch holes to preveng a tight seal. There are nowhere near enough electric outlets. You have to unplug a tv to use a reading lamp, crucial because if you watch tv from the sofa, the led room light projects a light the width of the tv onto the screen. The tv does not have Bluetooth, so I could not use my earphones. I wanted to use my wifi internet radio for entertainment in the middle of the night, but the hotel refused to have the company that installed their wifi system make a simple change that would have made the radio operational. The problem was that the system demands a user name and password, whereas internet radios only let you enter a password. The solution is to open the network to the radio's mac address, which they refused. There is absolutely no place to hang a towel or wet garment anywhere. In spite of the complaints, and because the good far, far outweighs the bad, I would recommend the hotel to anyone reading this.

Unexpected stay here as a result of a late night cancelled flight - the rooms were clean and spacious - and the staff could not have been more helpful sorting rooms for us at 2am in the morning! A great central location and good breakfast was provided.

Highly recommended!

This was a great hotel in a perfect location. Modern, clean and comfortable. The room is spacious and lots of space in the bathroom. Lovely helpful staff that are prompt and courteous. The hotel is in an excellent location. There is a supermarket next door, a fantastic laundromat up the road and the city centre is in very close walking distance. I highly recommend and would stay here again.

Room was spacious and clean. Nothing to shout about on the views. Huge balcony. Very centrally located. No more than 5 minutes to the city centre by foot. Efficient. Breakfast was decent spread. Not much amenities within the hotel though. But still a good place to explore the city by foot

Would avoid. Feels like 3* at most. The hotel is in a good location – about all that can be said in terms of positive comments. We found the staff to be a mixture of poorly trained/unprofessional/disengaged. The hotel décor is very dark/gloomy. Our room was not properly cleaned prior to check-in. As others have commented, we found an unacceptable level of maintenance: broken fixtures/fittings in the bathroom and a broken drain in the shower with a danger of injury. The breakfast selection was very basic, drab and unappealing.
