In spite of poor reviews, we decided to book the Bankfield for my birthday weekend back visiting ex-neighbours and family in the Yorkshire Dales. My wife had attended college in Bingley and the Bankfield had been the grand venue for college formal occasions. We arrived on Saturday 31 August, earlier than the 3pm room availability time, hoping at least to be able to use the toilets after a long journey and drop off our luggage before returning after one of our visits. Driving up to the hotel, things didn’t look promising. The grounds are littered and unkempt and plants in the planters around the entrance long dead and withered. The reception staff were unhelpful and wouldn’t find a place to store our luggage until our room was ready. When we visited the toilets we were disgusted. In both ladies’ and gentlemen’s toilets, there were blocked wcs and cubicles without toilet paper or even toilet paper holders. They were crumbling, dirty and stinking. Leaving the hotel and discussing our equally dismal experience, my wife and I decided we couldn’t even contemplate returning and telephoned reception to cancel our reservation. Although we had pre-paid for two nights’ bed and breakfast at the non- refundable rate, we were not taking up our booking on the grounds that the accommodation offered by this hotel is not fit for purpose and we should be refunded. After some discussion with the manager, the receptionist agreed this but it is now two weeks ago and we have not been refunded or had any replies to our complaints to Accor Hotels .

The hotel was very dated and could have done with a good clean throughout. As we were on a coach trip, we were ushered into a small dining area, and two members of staff served us a choice of two meals, all of which were very below standard. And plates were served cold, didn’t enjoy it at all. Would not return to this hotel. One member of staff was on reception when we arrived, then served us dinner and then was behind the bar in the evening.

Never this hotel, probably not a Mercure, we 'All' expect better

Have you ever been in a hotel room where everything just felt so dusty, greasy and dirty that you did could only fall to sleep in your clothes on top of the bed? This was that hotel. There was mould and hair in the shower, flaking paint on the walls, stains on the duvet, dust on every surface, mould in the windows, flies in the lamps - disgusting. The sad thing is that on checking in they said it was good we were in the "new" section. I complained and they said they would "Speak to housekeeping". This went far beyond housekeeping, and I have complained to Accor, but have not had any response.

Customer service exceeded Thank you to the manager for helping re an issue nobody could resolve. I was experiencing a problem with the hotel which no member of staff could help me with. It stressed me out to the point I had to reach out to the new manager. Thank you Mr Majumder

Needs an update - very tired looking. However, most staff were exceptional! For example, 8 of us had an evening meal and the food was good. The woman who served us was very attentive throughout, (I think her name was Sylvia.) She gave us individual bills, even for the four of us who shared a bottle of wine! Nothing was too much trouble. The beds were clean and very comfortable. On leaving, the guy on reception came out to take group photos for us,and again, nothing was too much trouble!
