Great location, cute kitch decor, careless staff, and health and safety issues are plenty . Arrival/Departure: The hotel's entry consists of narrow doorways, steep stairs, no handrails, and no bellman to help with luggage. The glass door near the reception desk is quite heavy and slams shut quickly. My fingers got slammed in the door and are now bruised. Getting to the room was also an adventure. The hotel is actually two buildings, with a more modern building in the rear. The path to the room includes 12-15 exterior stairs at the rear of the building, then a trip through the parking lot and next to the bins. A keycard is required to enter the back building; no hotel staff are on duty there. Upon arrival, we found that someone had left the door propped open. Upon arrival at the room, we found a hallway full of room service dishes. The room was cute except for the view. We looked out at the above-mentioned trash bins and car park. Keep in mind that at least 50% of the rooms at the property have this view. The interior of the room and amenities were also lacking. Here is a list of issues: Only one bath towel was provided, and most basics like extra coffee pods, milk and sugar, glasses, and mugs were missing. The room was quite dusty, the refrigerator was more of a hot box than a fridge, the heat did not work, and the bathroom sink was clogged. The clogged drain was reported but not attended to. Room and food/bar service are unavailable after 11 pm. There is a phone in the lobby with a direct line to Royal Taxi; unfortunately, it is unusable. A keypad is required to complete a taxi reservation, and this phone does not have one. The front desk staff said that they were unaware. Check-out is an exercise in trust, as there is no secure place to leave luggage. Luggage is piled up in the corner of the Lobby next to the main door. The only things that keep luggage from being stolen are the difficult stairs and heavy doors at the entrances. Finally, the staff seem to be very young and inexperienced. It feels like someone's mom and dad own a hotel and gave it to the kids to manage. There is a distinct lack of professionalism. All of this joy cost £645 for two nights. Needless to say, we won't be back.

The location and classic building are not matched by the interior of the hotel, which is tired and in places downright shabby. walls and woodwork are chipped and scuffed. The staff were quick to respond when we asked to be moved from our twin room to a double, and someone came immediately to reorganise the beds. however the room felt dusty, the windows were dirty -covered in builders’ waste -or worse, and the window frames were rotten and falling apart. The window looked out on 2 air conditioning units which could be heard all night. There were no hand towels in the bathroom, but 2 bath mats instead.For a premium price they should do better- another guest told me that the new, annexe rooms were much better than our room in the old building.

Good points: - Nice looking old building from the outside - Nice furniture in the reception area / lobby - The South African waiter in the restaurant was lovely and friendly - The food in the restaurant was quite nice and large portions - Bed comfortable - Breakfast was quite nice Bad points: - Carpets in hallways old and very grubby looking - Room doors need to be repainted or at least cleaned. The door to our room and our bathroom door was filthy - The hotel lobby / reception area smells horrible of drains / toilet - The halfboard dinner offer was overly complicated when we got to the restaurant. We were given 3 different versions, which were different to the website. - The restaurant was freezing. A bit less so in the area nearest the lobby, where we had to move to, but still pretty cold - Dirty grout in the shower tray. Black mould - Broken grout and cracked floor tile in bathroom - Room was very cold. The radiator took ages to heat up. There was apparently no portable heater available for us. The receptionist said she would look for one for us, but didn’t get back to us about it - Our room did not smell nice. It smelled like drains - Decor in the room pretty rough around the edges. Dirty lampshades. Ripped paper on right hand side of bed. Shabby and didn’t feel clean enough to me. Not sure how this is a 4 star hotel

I booked a room at this hotel in June (3 months prior to my stay). At 1pm on checkin day I received an email from the hotel cancelling my stay. The reason the hotel gave was they had ‘overbooked’. I was left in the soaking rain, having arrived on the train, with all my bags and without a room. The hotel offered to put me in their ‘sister’ hotel, a 40 minute walk away. The hotel offered to pay for a taxi one-way but I needed to checkin, then come back into Oxford city centre for dinner, then get back to the hotel, and the same the following morning which would have left me significantly out of pocket. As they had suggested I stay at their sister hotel the hotel initially refused to offer a refund which left me absolutely flabbergasted. I had to get the booking agent involved to argue for a refund which they eventually conceded to. In the end I had to cancel my plans in Oxford and travel back to Suffolk that evening which ruined what should have been a pleasant trip. The hotel treated me absolutely terribly, I would think very carefully before booking with Mercure again if this is their standard of customer service.

Hotel is in a fantastic location to explore the town and has parking which is excellent. Staff are lovely and the room was clean. Our room overlooked the main road which was so noisy that we did not get a great deal of sleep.
