Had a lovely stay with friends, excellent food and breakfast. Rooms very comfortable. Excellent service from Reed throughout our stay . Would certainly stay again. Great location for the Christmas market and shops. Parking now issues and felt very safe x

This hotel has a lovely atmosphere and amazing position in the town, There are lots of pubs and restaurants within a few minutes walk. We came for the Christmas Market and the atmosphere was wonderful. Our room had a Cathedral View and you could see the lights of the market close by. So easy to get everywhere from here, perfect for tourists to see a piece of Historical England. The Breakfast however, lived up to its reputaion, basically that they run out of important items and take an age to refill them. We were expecting it. This morning they ran out of Eggs and a small queue of people formed, clutching the rest of their breakfasts on their plates waiting for the eggs to turn up, we joined them. And lo, the waitress appeared with 5, barely fried eggs. Faces fell, everyone dutifully took one and then guess what, ....there were no eggs! A tray of perhaps, 20 would have been good!

Sad old Hotel

Firstly, this not a 4 star hotel. It has a nice frontage, position and reception but that where any similarity ends. When I arrived having walked from the station in the rain I was told that there was no meals for residents as they were catering for Christmas parties and my best bet was to eat somewhere else. I had not been told of this until that moment. My room (described as a "Classic double") bore no resemblance to the website photograph - remember the number - 226 - do not accept this room, it's a small double at best. My first night coincided with storm Darragh, a very windy night, my window was repeatedly blown open by the strength of the wind and the air conditioning control was blank, I assumed that they knew this as an electric heater had been left there. This had little or no effect against the regular breeze coming into the room. In the bathroom the hot tap in the sink spat boiling water at me and ironically the shower was Luke warm at best. The next morning I asked at reception to see if they could arrange for somebody to fix the window so that it could be closed and stay closed. Breakfast was a buffet with a single machine with which you could choose your coffee, dry pastries and various meats and eggs. On returning to my room later that day I found the window open again and when I went to reception they confirmed that someone had managed to close the window, not fix it, but close it! Somebody came up and eventually shut it so that it wouldn't fly open, the receptionist offed me a drink with my bar meal for the problems I'd had. Unknown to me the air conditioning had come to life and woke me in the middle of the night because of the noise. This seemed to happen every couple of hours. I have recorded this on a video attached. With the exception of a couple of members of staff the was no empathy at all at this Hotel, it looks impressive and has a nice view of the cathedral but is nothing like you would expect from a 4 star hotel. If you consider that I paid nearly £400 for 3 nights the service and overall quality was poor to say the least.

We sincerely apologise for the numerous issues you encountered during your visit, which fell below the standards we strive to provide at our hotel. We understand your frustration with the communication regarding the unavailability of meals for residents due to Christmas parties. We regret that you were not informed of this prior to your arrival, but were happy that we were able to offer you a meal later that evening. We will take steps to improve communication in such situations in the future. We are sorry to learn of the unsatisfactory condition of your room. Our standard double rooms are of different sizes, and the description and photographs online show a variety of room configurations. Unfortunately, not all of our rooms are pictured. We can confirm that room 226 is a double room, though we acknowledge it is on the smaller side. Our compact double rooms have a 4ft bed and is positioned against the wall and the bed in room 226 is not. Regarding the malfunctioning window, we apologise that this impacted your stay, especially during the stormy weather. We understand that this significantly affected your comfort and well-being. We will investigate this matter thoroughly and take appropriate steps to ensure that all guest rooms have properly functioning windows. With regards to the lukewarm shower, I have asked our maintenance team to look into this further. They will investigate the issue as the shower should have reached the correct temperature during your stay. They are dedicated to resolving these issues and ensuring all bathroom fixtures are functioning safely and correctly. The same applies to the noise you experienced with the air conditioning unit. We understand the impact it had on your sleep quality. Our team will thoroughly investigate this as the unit should be silent once switched off. We are taking all necessary steps to prevent its reoccurrence. We appreciate your feedback regarding our breakfast buffet and will consider it as we continuously work to improve its quality and variety. We are disappointed that your overall experience did not meet the expected standard. We value your feedback and acknowledge that the quality of your stay fell short of your expectations. We strive to provide our guests with a comfortable and enjoyable experience and sincerely apologise for failing to do so.

A disappointment at Winchester Mercure

My Wife and I stayed here for two nights in order to visit the Christmas market as this hotel is the nearest to it. Our stay was disappointing in various ways which I’ll expand upon but it must be stated that the staff are great. They work hard and remain in good humour despite the drawbacks of this hotel. The main problem is that it is so down-at-heel . The reception area isn’t too bad but, for instance, the floor edges at the lift doors are trimmed with duct tape. The furniture in the dining room and our bedroom was very old and tatty( the bed was comfortable,which is good at least). The brass light switches on the wall of the dining room appeared to date from the sixties. The buffet breakfast was not good: there is no black pudding provided and the scrambled egg resembled custard. There also seemed to be a shortage of breakfast teabags which kept running out whilst fruit infusions were plentiful: odd. The daytime and evening dining menu is just weird, especially for a four-star hotel! Finally, there are no USB sockets so you need to take your ‘phone charger. We stayed midweek and the car park was rammed: weekends must be tricky unless you drive a Smart car. The place should either completely refurbished or rebuilt.

Brilliant location Room cleanliness not good. Grubby light switches, dirty sink with shaved hair around taps. Staff very frazzled Very old fashioned and tired. Window handle broken off. Wall lights chopped. No visit to make beds or empty bins or refresh tea bags No toiletries Certainly not a 4 star hotel
