Nice place but terrible service

Beautiful place that is centrally located but service is inexplicably terrible. Our room was hot, in-room thermostat didn’t work and we were told the front desk controlled the temperature and they would cool down the room. Never happened, Room was hot as hell all night. Crazy.

Old French Charm meets Contemporary

Was looking forward to this stay as had heard many good things. Booked a Junior Suite which is better described as a suite to be honest. It has a bedroom with a closing door, large living space including a dining table. Two Juliet balconies gave way to a commanding view across town and to the mountains. Colour scheme was muted in shades of grey and beige which is pretty much the standard. Bedroom was large and the bed was comfortable. Found the aircon didn’t seem to cool the bedroom as much as the other room (oh the humanity). A very large bathroom including a spa bath and television in built. Decent amenities and towels. Our room came with Club Lounge access. The hotel does not have a separate lounge per se but guests are invited to the bar where they have access to a menu with various culinary treats and a decent list of alcoholic and nonalcoholic drinks available. The martini is a winner and a special thanks to Federico for looking after us. It is a very nice space with a real French club feel. Breakfast is served in the breakfast space and the staff here were very friendly and helpful. A very decent a la carte menu complemented with a small buffet. The range of croissant is worth a special mention. We had a small hiccough with one of the staff around the booking of the use of the in-house hammam. I was sure it had been booked but was categorically told otherwise. This was raised with management who were kind enough to listen to my complaint. A very premium hotel in a great location.

Bonjour / Kia Ora wockinwod, Thank you very much for taking the time to share your detailed feedback following your stay with us. We are delighted to hear that you enjoyed your Junior Suite and the views it offers, as well as the comfort of your bedroom and the spacious bathroom. I’m glad that you were able to enjoy our Club Lounge experience and that Federico made your visit extra special. I will be sure to pass on your kind words to him—it’s always wonderful for the team to know their efforts are appreciated. We also appreciate your honest feedback regarding the air conditioning in your room and the booking hiccup with the hammam. Please rest assured we have shared your comments with the relevant departments to ensure a seamless experience for our future guests. It was a pleasure having you with us, and we hope to welcome you back to Sofitel Queenstown soon for another memorable stay. Kind Regards, Pradnya Lohate Front Office Manager Sofitel Queenstown Hotel and Spa

A five star hotel this is not

Disappointing stay that fell well short of five-star standards. We stayed at this hotel over the Christmas period, an important holiday time for our family, and unfortunately the experience felt much closer to a three-star hotel than a five-star one. In parts, it was reminiscent of a Fawlty Towers experience rather than the level of service we expected from Sofitel. While the Christmas lunch itself was lovely and well done, many other aspects of the hotel were simply not up to scratch. The property is clearly looking tired, and it was surprising to see it still carrying the Sofitel brand. There was no laundry service available for the entire Christmas period, which is very inconvenient for a luxury hotel. Room service was extremely limited, offering little more than party-style snacks such as spring rolls and croquettes, with no proper meal options available. Our room was sold as a “town view,” with a “Juliet Balcony” and this was misleading. The view consisted of a verge leading up to a road with traffic and a car park — not what one would reasonably expect. And as we were on the ground level, I am not sure how it is a balcony? Breakfast was also underwhelming. While the cooked options were acceptable, the buffet selection was disappointing and lacked both quality and variety. Service issues were particularly concerning. On our first night, we requested an extra blanket and a small duvet. The blanket delivered was dirty, and instead of a duvet we were sent a mattress protector with no cover. When we raised this with the hotel, we were shocked to be told that they had run out of blankets and had no spare duvets available. This is a long way from the service standards expected of a five-star hotel, especially during peak holiday season. Overall, this stay did not reflect the quality, service, or attention to detail associated with Sofitel. With some significant investment and a renewed focus on service, this hotel could improve, but as it stands, it does not justify its five-star rating.

Cozy hotel a block from Ferg Burger and the rest of the action. Hotel felt like home literally. Heated floors and towel warmer a big plus. Will visit again

Unfortunately this is the lowest rated review of any hotel I have provided based on an underwhelming experience we had at Sofitel Queenstown. It’s disappointing there is not much to say about this hotel and not sure where to start. The arrival - the drive way was overflowing with vehicles and a truck so we stopped where we could expecting a porter to meet us (as we would expect from any other Sofitel property) The porter service was provided by Guest services after we checked in who then moved our car and arranged our bags to be sent to the room. As a Diamond member we were not offered a room upgrade however advised the room we had over looked the lake (2 blocks away) The room - A luxury room booked and unfortunately it is plain and simple. Far from the standard of other hotels under this brand. Usually we walk into a room with excitement and take pictures but nothing to write home about here. The room also had a strange smell which Guest services attended too. The bath plug didn’t work and had broken teeth. Guest services had to come up twice to fix. The gym - Tiny and outdated equipment. On one visit the water cooler was empty and when I informed guest services it took 20 minutes to replenish. Valet parking - Always a wait of 10-20 minutes. One on arrival back to the hotel at 01:00am after a event, we were greeted by the same guest service agent who was on earlier that morning at 07:00am and again the following breakfast shift. It was clear this hotel has a staffing issue which is fine to comprehend however it’s not satisfactory when the hotel is charging $650 a night for a room that would be worth $300 anywhere else. Unfortunately there was never any sign of a hotel manager to discuss these examples with, or did not receive a feeling of welcome here. Club benefits - the staff were fantastic and friendly. All food service came from the kitchen unlike a standard buffet of other Sofitel lounges. Breakfast - the cafe staff were again sensational and remembered our preferences. The food was tasty with À la carte and buffet options available.
