An Exercise in Persistence (both in surviving the heat and reposting this review)

As a frequent traveler and long-time patron of Accor Hotels, I approached my stay at Novotel Berlin Potsdamer Platz with optimism, luggage, and the naïve assumption that “air conditioning” meant, well, air conditioning. What followed was an illuminating study in discomfort, denial, and creative approaches to reputation management. Let’s start with the good news: the location is superb. You can easily walk to major landmarks. Or, if you prefer, simply remain in the lobby to experience the sensation of sightseeing in tropical humidity without leaving the building. The proximity to public transport is also convenient, should you wish to escape to somewhere cooler, like the Sahara. The air conditioning, however, was not merely broken, it was philosophically absent. According to management, it’s been “under maintenance” since June 3rd, which suggests the repairs have entered their existential phase. The hotel’s decision to continue advertising it as a working amenity might generously be described as “optimistic,” though “misleading” also works nicely. As a result, the scent in the corridors was that special blend of humidity and resignation one only finds in neglected spaces. The room itself felt like a sauna designed by someone who hates joy. The real heat, however, came from the management’s response, or rather, their art of not responding. My formal complaint received a reply so impersonal and inaccurate it could have been written by a random sentence generator trained on corporate apologies. Compensation? None. Accountability? Missing in action. Reality? Selectively edited. And speaking of editing, this review itself has become a sort of collaborative literary project between me and the hotel management, who have flagged and reported it multiple times. I’ve now resubmitted it with the persistence of someone applying for a grant to tell the truth. Each revision seems to upset them anew, which might explain why they’re focusing on the GDPR implications of mentioning an employee’s surname rather than the actual absence of breathable air. To Mr. Kranz, the Hotel Director, who personally wrote to demand that I remove said surname but not to address a single substantive issue: your priorities are noted. Reputation management is clearly alive and well, even if the ventilation system isn’t. I hope this iteration earns your editorial blessing. This experience stands as a curious outlier in the usually reliable Accor portfolio—a cautionary tale of what happens when corporate indifference meets malfunctioning climate control. On the bright side, this Accor property is certainly on the shortlist for the award of 'Worst hotel in Germany.' In conclusion: if you enjoy warm climates, selective transparency, and Kafkaesque customer service, this might be the perfect Berlin stay for you. Otherwise, I’d suggest looking elsewhere—preferably somewhere where “air conditioning” refers to an actual, working device and not a theoretical concept.

We fully understand how uncomfortable this must have been, especially given the high outdoor temperatures, and we truly regret the inconvenience caused. We would like to inform you that the air conditioning system has since been fully repaired. The necessary spare parts have been delivered and successfully installed, and the system is once again operating normally. Please rest assured that we were fully aware of the issue during your stay and worked under high pressure together with our contracted technical service provider to obtain and install the required components. Unfortunately, delays in the delivery of these parts were beyond our control. Nevertheless, resolving the matter was an absolute priority for us, and we regret the impact this had on your experience. We made every effort to communicate the air conditioning situation transparently to all arriving guests — via signage at reception, a banner on our website, and verbal information at check-in. In light of the situation, the following options were offered to all affected guests: Free cancellation of the reservation Assistance with relocation to another property (subject to availability) For guests who chose to stay: complimentary water, ice cream, and a partial compensation You chose to stay with us, and we are sorry to hear that you felt this was not sufficiently communicated or addressed. Please also note that you have received multiple replies to your previous messages since the first complaint, which you sent during your stay. We are happy to reiterate the content of those replies here to ensure clarity and transparency. However, we must address one important point: intentionally publishing or sharing personal information about employees, including their full names, without consent constitutes a violation of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Such behavior is not legitimate and cannot be accepted. We kindly ask you to refrain from doing so in any future communication or publication. Once again, we regret that your experience did not meet your expectations and that the temporary technical malfunction affected your impression of our hotel. We value your loyalty as a frequent traveler and long-standing guest of Accor Hotels and hope that, despite this unfortunate situation, you will allow us the opportunity to welcome you again under better circumstances. Hotel location is good, room was good decorated, but toilet had a smell, and It took a lot of time to fill the siphon. The room cleaning only tidied up the beds but never vacuum cleaned the floor.
