All the details of the hotel are as follows; -rooms are normal size -bathroom and toilet are clean -heating system is old, our room's thermostat was not working, so you have to either leave it on or off all the time, it makes a bit of noise so having it on all the time will give you a headache and dry your nose a bit. -heating system in our friends' room was only blowing cold air, they froze in the winter, we informed the reception about the situation but since there was no technical service on the weekend, they gave a small heater, they managed for two nights, they didn't even offer to change the room. -Let's come to the important issues, the hotel is 20 minutes away from the city center. So why did we choose it, because it was an economical and high-rated hotel but it ended in disappointment, frustration and anger. -Why? They explain everything nicely when you check-in but they don't say that breakfast is per person, in fact this issue is never mentioned, when you leave, you see that there is an additional breakfast fee. -When you pay 400 Euros for the entire hotel for 4 nights and 200 Euros for breakfast, the economic image of the hotel suddenly disappears. -Why would you choose this place for an economical family holiday when there are many alternatives very close to the center for 50% more? -There are hotels very close to the center for 150 Euros per night including breakfast. Let's come to the conclusion; Hotels are at the forefront of the service sector and the most important point they care about should be customer satisfaction. The fee policy (especially breakfast) that is never mentioned when entering the hotel is mentioned when leaving the hotel and causes disappointment in the customers. While we are on holiday happily, it suddenly turns into an angry mood. If the hotel had mentioned this issue during check-in, we would have cancelled the breakfast. Instead of having the same breakfast every day, we would try a different breakfast in the city every day for 50 Euros per day. Please make your calculations by considering all these situations. If you do not think about such fine details, your holiday may be expensive.

Fantastic accommodation and incredibly friendly staff. Me (20) and my younger brother (15) were travelling alone for the first time to Germany with very limited German speaking skills. Lured in by the extravagant looking hotel, we booked for our week long trip during August. When we arrived, we were greeted by friendly hotel staff who were understandably concerned about us travelling alone. After speaking to multiple staff members and the hotel manager, they went above and beyond to ensure that we were comfortable, happy and safe during our stay in Germany and let us know that we could ask them for help and advice whenever. They regularly checked in on us, making friendly conversation and smiling and waving whenever we walked by. The accommodation itself was fantastic. The room was lovely, clean and had a brilliant view. We were majorly impressed by the speaker in the bathroom connected to the TV and took full advantage of this feature throughout! The Novotel was within walking distance of the train station, the chocolate museum, the cathedral and other brilliant attractions with a beautiful scenic walk along the canal which we walked every evening. On our last night, we sat in the restaurant for the infamous chicken schnitzel. The food was impeccable and we wished we’d eaten here from the beginning. If we visit the area in the future, we will for sure be staying here again

The hotel was ok. Staff were not very friendly. The location was decent. Room was way too hot and the gym wasn’t very good. Probably wouldn’t stay here again if I visited cologne in the future. Didn’t have breakfast as it was 24 euros per adult. Lots of nice restaurants and cafes nearby though so lots of choice.

I would have given a better score if I hadn’t had an issue one evening at the bar / lounge / restaurant, where I was forgotten, despite clearly showing I was ready to order. I waited for more than 30 minutes and when they finally paid attention to me, they told me the kitchen was closed. As the hotel does not offer room service, the only alternative was to find a place to eat in the area, which turned out to be impossible at a relatively late hour. As I had a nice experience at the same place the previous evening with a kind and helpful staff, I believe my experience was an isolated incident which probably does not reflect the level of service of the hotel in general. That said, the unfortunate episode left a bad taste in my mouth.

Disappointing. Gave second chance, wish we had gone elsewhere

First night the wardrobe door was missing meaning light stayed on all night, hindering sleep. We returned a few days later to a different room. The room rate increased and so we did not feel able to justify the crazy €24 per person for breakfast. Reception would not compromise. Air con v noisy again hindering sleep. No milk in room (reception say only coffee whitener is provided). Again reception refused to help further. So I couldn’t even have a cup of tea. Shame, as hotel in good location and very clean but the unhelpful staff, with no apparent wish to do extra to help, let it down badly. In other poor reviews the manager says “give us another chance” well we did and now we regret it. Had stayed in a Holiday Inn in meantime, that was excellent, will use that chain in future instead.
