Better room this time

트립어드바이저 평점 4.0/5

Stay here regularly due to it being the designated corporate hotel. Tired property but fantastic location by the coach terminal and the tram stop and close to restaurants and shops. Room 641 is located facing Northbourne Ave with a balcony and outdoor furniture. It’s good to have the sliding door open but the sound of the trams is quite loud if you are a light sleeper not to mention the moths attracted the the lights at night. In all a reasonable room but it is getting very tired and badly in need of a renovation.

I’ve stayed here a few times and it’s always been great. Pool is particularly nice. Breakfast buffet is great and well run by Susan

Didn't feel like a Novotel

Somehow this hotel does not feel like a Novotel. It is perfectly functional but feels rather basic. The swimming pool area whilst indoors does open up to an outdoors which is a bonus. We stayed in the 1 BR apartment which was nice to have a larger area but was an odd layout with a kitchenette area as you enter the room before entering the bedroom section which is where the sofa is - not a traditional 1BR layout. Nothing wrong with the facilities but more functional than welcoming. Cleanliness was fine. The breakfast though was disappointing with a very average selection. The usual items but that is about it - it did not stand out. As far as Accor status benefits, the wecome gift was a bar of chocolate which felt lazy and unfortunately the welcome card was addressed to someone else. Nothing that ruined the stay but more an oh dear moment - never had that before. Location was handly to restaurants and other Civic facilities.

Tired and clean, good location

I stayed there for two nights on the fifth floor. It’s a very tired hotel that’s definitely due for a makeover, though some simple improvements could make a big difference. A few lights in my room weren’t working, and the conditioner dispenser was empty, suggesting a bit more attention to detail is needed. That said, the room was clean, and the location is excellent—just a five-minute walk to some fantastic eateries

Beware that steam from the shower can trigger the fire alarm

This is a very well located hotel in central Canberra, at the Jolimont Tourist Centre and bus terminal. Since I lived in Canberra from 1997-2007, the Murrays Bus Service to and from Sydney has become very frequent with a lot of passengers deciding to get a coach to and from Sydney Airport. Given the distance from central Canberra to the capital's airport and the time required to check in and clear security, it probably takes just as much time to get the bus to Sydney as does to fly. Even though I arrived in Canberra by air (from Melbourne), I decided to stay at the Novotel on 65 Northbourne Avenue as my flight arrived late, well after the reception at my long-term accomodation (I was in Canberra for 7 weeks on business) had closed. I checked out for my serviced apartment elsewhere, close to the Novotel, the next day. Despite this hotel's excellent location, there were problems. The first one was the confusing design of the room on arrival. Although my room was large, there was an area that initially looked like a kitchenette, but in fact it was part of the bathroom (basin, taps) that was actually located in the foyer entrance. This meant that I had to exit the bathroom in order to wash hands, brush teeth and so on. In addition to this, the smoke detectors for fire could not distinguish between steam and flames. This indicates that the fire alarm system is extremely old. There were signs near the bathroom and on the shower asserting "We love a hot shower, but please keep the door shut tight when showering. The fire alarm can be activated by the steam and you may be liable for a charge of up to $1500." Contemporary fire alarm systems have been able to distinguish between steam and smoke for the past 30-40 years. There were problems in this area in the 1970s through to the 1980s, but modern fire alarms can distinguish between steam and smoke in 2025. It is outrageous that this hotel should threaten to fine guests when they are responsible for ensuring that their fire alarm system is up to date and compliant with contemporary standards and building codes. I stay in numerous Accor properties around the world and have had never seen this anywhere else. For example, I stayed at the Pullman at Brisbane Airport five months after staying in Canberra and their fire alarm system was clearly able to distinguish steam from flame. Guests were welcome to leave the door to the bathroom ajar while showering if they preferred. Unfortunately the design of the bathroom, basin and lounge area meant that I didn't notice the sign until after I had a hot steaming shower. I didn't close the door tightly as I wanted access to the basin and taps at the same time. Fortunately, the fire alarm was never triggered. However, the fact that the hotel indicates it will fine guests $1500 for a false alarm is unsatisfactory and unacceptable. They should be obliged to ensure that their fire alarm is up to date and can make a distinction between steam and smoke, like all other modern systems do, including those at most Accor hotels (and everyone I've stayed in before). The decor in my room was old and tired, in need of fresh refurbishment. The dining area of the hotel was pleasant and breakfast in the morning was delicious and tasty. The bed in my room was comfortable and pleasant, with beautiful sheets and a duvet doona (I have found this consistent across the Accor brand). The staff were friendly, accomodating and efficient. My two star review here is in no way a reflection of their professionalism; they were excellent. Despite my two star rating, I would stay here again if I had a late arrival or early morning departure from this part of Canberra, especially if arriving and departing by bus. Just as well that I am now aware that the steam from the shower can trigger the fire alarm and risk a $1500 fine. I now know to keep the door to the bathroom shut tightly!
