Great location for an authentic stay in Cologne

My wife and I stayed here as I was celebrating a big birthday and I studied here in Cologne many moons ago so I wanted somewhere where we could access all of Cologne and the Ibis Köln Centrum gave us just that. Right next to Barbarossaplatz tram stop to get to Neumarkt, the old town, over the river in Deutz and on the other line up to Rudolfplatz it was perfect. The hotel room was comfortable and clean. It had everything we needed for a mini break. The bathroom had no electricity, when we mentioned this we were offered another room but we only had 1 more night so we declined as this wasn’t a major issue. We didn’t have breakfast in the hotel as there was a Merzenich bakery at the end of the street which was lovely and very cheap. We had a few drinks in the hotel bar and the staff were very friendly and provided excellent service. All in all, if I were coming back for a short break I’d definitely stay here again. Budget hotel but decent breakfast

Super-friendly staff

Initially, I wanted to give four stars because of the location. The hotel is not exactly located in the heart of the city (it's a half-hour walk from the main train station and the dome), and it's on a very busy, noisy street (the windows are marvels of technology that block all the noise, but when you open them ...). But then: the staff is super-friendly, and even in the most busy and hectic phase of check-outs and run-on-the-breakfast, they maintain calm, genuine hospitality, and they make you feel welcome. So because of the great staff: five points. Apart from that, it's what you expect from an ibis: no-frills, clean (except in the immediate entrance area of the room, where the previous guest musst have put their dirty luggage; the weather in Cologne was atrocious, and the stain in the carpet would have needed deep-cleaning and shampooing (probably would have been better design to not have the entrance area carpeted)), hot shower, comfy bed, and overall well-maintained, even though not the most modern property. Nice breakfast selection with good coffee and fun waffle maker, and with friendly, attentive breakfast hosts. Great team!
