A nice alternative stop-over hotel, if a little past it's best in places

We stopped over here en-route from the South of France to Calais. We really enjoyed our evening in Nevers, partly as it coincided with the end of a local festival - but even without, the town seems to have a lot going for it - a nice river, some good restaurants, and generally pleasant vibes. The hotel is well located, being about a 10-15min walk over the Loire Bridge from the main bits of the town centre (a nice distance we found). Parking was free and there seemed plenty - CCTV/barriers would have been nice given we had a lot in the car. The common areas of the hotel (bar/restaurant) are in good nick. The rooms are fine - they were clean, and the bathroom was good. The bed was very comfortable and the air con was appreciated in the heatwave!!!! There are quite a few areas in which the hotel feels dated - mostly the pebbledash wallpaper that is everywhere, and the fact that some doors are quite utilitarian (and no lifts for some rooms). The rooms are also small (partly because the bed is v. big!). None of this was a major issue - a bit of refurb would really improve the hotel. Breakfast though was really good - excellent continental selection and all tasted good. Value for money was good also (not much more expensive than more budget options nearby). 7/10 - but a 4 as we had a lovely evening!

Filthy Rooms & Rude staff

Had a booking for 57 pilgrims for half board. Some of us were very dissapointed as some of the rooms had dirty sheets on the beds and were filthy from previous occupants and when requested a change of room was given another disgusting room with dirty sheet that had blood on it. The whole process of fixing the room took longer than the time allocated by Ibis promise to fix what was wrong and the promise of free stay if the problem was not sorted in time. Another pilgrim too had dirty duvet and dirty sheets and the room was not changed and the staff grudgingly change the sheets and duvet cover. The staff was rude and when we kindly requested that two pilgrims who had pork allergies to have an omelette instead, the staff in charge made a huge fuss and told us that those who cannot have pork just had to have the potatoes and veg. We pointed out that the veg too had bacon in it too and to please at least give them an omelette, the staff in charge was not happy and said that even if the cook can do the omellettes it will take quite a while and it took over half an hour before those two pilgrims had their eggs and when the eggs came there were not omelettes but runny scrambled eggs ! We were also told that there is no butter to have with our bread and soup. And while waiting for the desserts to be served one of the pilgrims asked whether we can help ourselves to coffee from the coffee machine and a server said that it was all right but when the staff in charge of dining saw some of the pilgrims at the coffee machine she shouted at them for using the coffee machine and then requested payment for the coffee.When desert was brought in, the dessert spoons were actually chucked at us at the table rather than laid nicely. We were the only occupants in the dining room at the time. We asked to see the manager and was told that the manager will come and see us at breakfast at 8am the next day to hear our complaints but the manager never turned up, It was definitely the worst experience we pilgrims had and we had no apologies and would definetely never use that hotel again on our pilgrimage to Nevers.

Holiday trip through France & Italy

We stayed two nights on our way to Italy, which gave us time two wind down and explore Nevers. The Nevers IBIS being well situation to do this. Having stayed before a couple of years ago, we were disappointed to find that the restaurant was presently closed. We ate at the Mercure on the first night we stayed and "did ourown thing" the following night and on our return night two weeks later. Otherwise, we were more than satisfied and would stay again should the occasion occur.
