The Customer is always Wrong

When we arrived at the Hotel Mercure Centre the check-in process was very convoluted and not only was our room not ready but they thought the booking was for room only, whereas it was half-board and, after checking something, they said that was fine. All went well at this hotel until the start of our second evening meal there. We had an evening meal on day one without a problem and also breakfast on day two. However, shortly after sitting down for dinner on the second evening, the head waiter walked over to our table and, in a very loud voice that everyone in the restaurant could hear, proceeded to tell us we had not paid to have dinner or indeed for breakfast either. We were quite stunned by his abrasive, loud, arrogant manner and the fact that despite us repeatedly telling him the hotel must have made a mistake, never at one point did he stop to consider this possibility but simply repeated himself. It got worse from there, as he was joined by a lady from reception who stood next to him and basically repeated what he had said. At no point during this exchange did they demonstrate an attitude of "the customer is always right", in fact it was the complete opposite. My wife was becoming visibly upset but still they would not accept what we were saying, made worse by the embarrassment of all the other diners looking at what was going on. We said we would get the booking paperwork from our room, which we took to the reception desk. At the point of doing so, the receptionist announced she had found the booking information on a system "in the background" and that we were, in fact, correct. So you might think that would have prompted an apology from both the receptionist and the head waiter, but no - he said "it wasn't our fault and it wasn't their fault!" Well, in actual fact it was entirely their fault. Still without an apology he said we could choose any 3 courses from the menu without additional cost, but by this time it was after 9pm so we simply chose our food from the half-board menu. We are both so incredibly disappointed by the behaviour and attitude of those members of staff and would have expected much more from a hotel such as the Mercure.

This is a very good Mercure ! Ideally located for the city the hotel overlooks the Loire and the public areas are very attractive and the staff super-welcoming and helpful, especially Monsieur Le Chef who constantly circulated in his full regalia making sure all guests were enjoying their stay at the hotel - the food in the restaurant was very nice and reasonably priced, the service excellent and professional. Our bedroom was of typical Mercure standard but more than adequate for a peaceful and comfortable night's sleep - we had a small balcony overlooking the Loire and the busy road bridge taking traffic south over the river.

The hotel is very centrally located in Orleans, but getting there was very straightforward. As the underground car park was closed due to construction work, we had to use the closed outdoor car park. The reception was very professional and friendly. Our room was functionally furnished, but nothing more. However, the view of the Loire from the 5th floor was brilliant. On the next morning, however, we had to move because construction noise one floor above us made it impossible to stay. We therefore moved from one of the top floors to the first floor. It remained unclear to us why the reception had allocated this room in the first place. The hotel was not full. The second room was slightly smaller than the first, but just as sober. But the construction noise caught up with us here too. You could also hear the roaring car traffic around the hotel very clearly. The breakfast experience was annoying. In the very pleasant and spacious breakfast room, several young ladies worked very listlessly and slowly. The buffet then only had achafing dish filled with scrambled eggs The chafing dish for bacon was empty, while the other two contained a tomato and a sausage. This did not change on request and looked almost similar on the second day; however, there were a few sausages. Otherwise, the selection and quality were not good either.

OK, But Needs a Refresh

This a fairly basic mid range hotel. All necessary amenities are there but need a refresh. The carpet is shabby, the shower grout and bathroom walls could use a refresh and everything would be better with a coat of paint. Convenient location and parking, OK service. Nothing memorable.

The property is located just at the entrance to the inner city. For healthy people, it's a nice 20-25 minutes' walk along the river to get to downtown. Otherwise one must take the car out from the ample, relatively cheap, hotel parking provided, as the nearest tram stop is not that near, either. Rooms and bathrooms are adequate, breakfast is good, and the excellent restaurant deserves a separate review. The view of the Loire River and beyond from our high-floor room alone was worth the stay. The hotel is very popular, particularly as a stop for tourists on their way to Northern Europe. Thus, during the season it's best to reserve early.
