The best walks in the Yorkshire Dales

The Yorkshire Dales National Park covers over 2,000 square kilometres, which means there’s plenty of space to explore!
Home of the Three Peaks, which make up the Three Peaks challenge, the Dales offer lots of routes to choose from. Whether you’re up for a gentle walk or a more challenging hike, you’re sure to find something to suit your group when you head to the Yorkshire Dales.
Mucker – Swaledale, North Yorkshire
The meadows in Swaledale burst into colour come spring and summer, making this a perfect time for a walk around the area. For a smooth 11-kilometre walk, start out at the village of Mucker, where you can leave your car. The landscape here hasn’t changed much since the 18th and 19th centuries, which means lots of field barns and dry stone walls as you walk. Don’t forget your camera! The floral carpets make an impressive picture.
Malham Tarn, North Yorkshire
Looking for something straightforward? This 5.8-kilometre walk around Malham Tarn offers visitors the chance to enjoy a variety of habitats including a wildlife-rich lake. Park at the Water Sinks Gate car park then walk around the lake for a beautiful couple of hours in the Yorkshire Dales.
Howgill Fells, Cumbria
For a more challenging walk in the Yorkshire Dales, set aside five to seven hours and head to the village of Sedbergh. This 15-kilometre hike ascends into Howgill Fells, with views over west Cumbria as your reward. Be sure to take a break when you get to the top. Enjoy the sights, and maybe a picnic, before climbing back down towards the town centre.
