One of the most varied and scenic coastlines in the world, with vast sandy beaches, rough rocky coves, and towering cliffs to discover, the Aberdeenshire coast well worth the journey north.

St Cyrus National Nature Reserve

In southern Aberdeenshire, St Cyrus National Nature Reserve is home to mile upon mile of golden sand dunes and grassy cliffs. Pass through the reserve on your road trip or pay a visit from Aberdeen and look out for falcons overhead, rare wildflowers in bloom, and colourful insects and wildlife among the greenery.

Dunnottar Castle

Head north from St Cyrus and enjoy the typically Scottish coastline until you reach Dunnottar Castle, one of Scotland’s best. The castle sits atop a rocky cliff overlooking the sea and has been visited by plenty of well-known historical figures including Mary Queen of Scots.

Balmedie

North of Aberdeen, Balmedie boasts vast sand dunes which will take your breath away. Head to the picture-perfect beach for a stroll before visiting the Ythan Estuary, where you might see seals bathing in the water.

Cruden Bay

Cruden Bay was one of Bram Stoker’s favourite holiday spots. It’s thought that the bay and the pretty coastal town inspired some of the landscape in the author’s most famous novel, Dracula, making it an exciting place for literature fans to visit.
While you’re there, why not head to Slains Castle, which is thought to have inspired Dracula’s castle in the iconic horror story.
