Planning a Short Weekend Break in Sheffield

Planning a short weekend break in Sheffield? One of Yorkshire’s most prominent and best-known cities, Sheffield is a fantastic location for a weekend getaway.

With so much culture, history, and plenty of Northern charm, this South Yorkshire city boasts something for everyone. Whether you’re taking in arts and cultural hubs, enjoying the bustle of the city’s fashionable shopping districts, or taking advantage of the nearby Peak District, lots to fit into a short weekend.

To help you plan your stay, here at Accor Hotels, we’ve listed some of our top recommendations for enjoying the city and surrounding areas.
  1. Visit the Peak District
  2. Discover museums and galleries
  3. Shop, shop, and shop some more!
  4. Eat your way around
  5. See Sheffield Winter Garden
  6. Go to Sheffield Cathedral

Visit the Peak District

Number one on our list of things to do on a short weekend break in Sheffield is to don your coat and walking boots and take a trip to the beautiful Peak District National Park.
A third of the Sheffield lies within the Peak District, making it the perfect base to explore the stunning moors, valleys, and hills. There are some particularly great Peak District walks which can be easily reached by car or public transport from Sheffield. We recommend the Hathersage to Stanage Edge walk or the Milthorpe walking route, both of which are suitable all ages and walking abilities.
Bonus? There are plenty of traditional English pubs in the area to relax in after!

Discover museums and galleries

Next on our list is to discover the city’s three major museums and galleries, all of which offer something different and unique.
Suppose art, craft and design spark your interest. In that case, we recommend taking a trip down to the Millenium Gallery, which hosts fascinating exhibitions, including an exploration into Sheffield’s metalwork industry. Or, explore the Graves Gallery for spectacular visual arts and famous works from well-known artists.
For a captivating insight into Sheffield’s culture, people and music, Weston Park is the place for you – and there’s plenty to keep the kids busy there too!

Shop, shop, and shop some more!

Our third recommendation is to take a stroll around the city itself, soaking in the atmosphere and becoming a part of the hustle and bustle.
Yorkshire folk are renowned for their friendliness, and there’s no better way to experience this than by popping in and out of local shops. You’ll find a wide variety of shops to explore in Sheffield. From independent trinket shops in the Antique Quarter and chic cosmopolitan shops in the Devonshire Quarter to big-name brands dotted around the city centre and the famous Meadowhall

Eat your way around

For foodies, Sheffield also has lots of great independent cafes and artisan food stalls scattered around the city, perfect for a bite to eat amid your exploring. Some of the best restaurants in Sheffield include:
  • Jöro
  • Piña
  • Tamper at Sellers Wheel
  • The Porter Pizza Company
  • Kommune
  • JH Mann
  • Ambulo
  • Elm
  • Forge Bakehouse

See Sheffield Winter Garden

Sheffield’s multi-award winning Winter Garden is another must while you’re in town. It’s one of the largest temperate glasshouses in the UK, home to more than 2,500 plants and different species from around the world. Head to the impressive building for an hour or two away from the bustling city. It’s a perfect place to avoid a shower, while sunshine enhances the aesthetics too!

Go to Sheffield Cathedral

The cathedral is one of the oldest buildings in Sheffield and well worth a visit if you’re a lover of history or architecture. It’s also conveniently located in the heart of the city, making it unmissable whether you admire it from the outside or head inside to see more.
With so much to do in Sheffield, it’s the perfect location for a short weekend break in the UK. Whether you make it out for a country walk, explore cultural galleries and museums, or do a spot of high-street shopping, the city has something to offer for everyone. Looking for a place to stay?
