Take in the view from these top rooftop bars in Melbourne

Melbourne has become known for its burgeoning arts and culture scene, which correlates with a hip populace that demands happening bars and entertainment venues. Combine that with the dramatic city skyline that towers over the community, and you have a recipe for some truly incredible rooftop venues. The city has become somewhat famous for its high-altitude alfresco environment, so if you want to rub elbows with some of Melbourne's most interesting people, you'll want to spend an evening at one of these top-rated rooftop bars.

Goldilocks bar bases its food and drink recipes, as well as its aesthetic, on the stuff of fairy tales. Offering both a rooftop bar and an indoor venue (which it calls a 'cosy cottage'), Goldilocks is a great place to visit regardless of the weather. Thanks to its central location, it offers up-close views of many of Melbourne's most dramatic buildings without the crowds you often associate with bars in the CBD. The bar is located on Swanston Street near Lonsdale Street directly above Noodle Kingdom, so it shouldn't be too difficult to get here from your accommodation in Melbourne.

Naked in the Sky

Located in the heart of trendy Fitzroy, Naked in the Sky is the epitome of cool. Not only does the venue boast an incredible rooftop location, it also has an adjoining lounge and an in-house restaurant. All the food here is Basque-oriented, and many of the establishment's drink options reflect it as well. The wine list, for example, includes Spanish vinos alongside Australian favourites.  We can't mention Naked in the Sky without giving you a brief glimpse at its menu. Try the gilda pintxos, served with anchovy, pickled peppers and olives. Spanish-style charcuterie places are also available, featuring meats such as bresaola, lomo, acorn-fed ham and cured pork loin. Prawn and beef skewers are also available for a more traditional choice, and vegetarians can try the crumbed eggplant or mushroom parfait.

Madame Brussels

Madame Brussels is a unique venue that's perfect for those who want to let loose and catch a glimpse of how Melbourne's young and restless live it up. The bar is covered in astroturf and lined with a characteristic trellis, which gives it a unique appeal and lends it a retro aesthetic. You can grab some drinks and head to the hedged bar, terrace or indoor garden, all of which are decked out in delightfully tacky '50s Palazzo-imitation style. If you're lucky, you may be in Melbourne on a weekend during which Madame Brussels is hosting a party. Themed events such as picnics, soirees and other gatherings take on an entirely new meaning at this unique bar.

The Red Hummingbird

Looking for something a bit more refined? The Red Hummingbird may be right up your alley. Located in the CBD, this beautiful outdoor space is often frequented by locals partaking in happy hour or seeking an indulgent night under the city lights. ocktails are the drink of choice at The Red Hummingbird, which is perfectly in line with the venue's glamorous aesthetic.

The Emerson

With expansive views that stretch from South Yarra to the CBD, The Emerson features both an enclosed rooftop bar and a completely outdoor seating area. The deck boasts daybeds and stylish benches for a unique mix of fashion and comfort. Clean lines dominate the aesthetic, giving it a distinctly modern feel, and the refined menu options only reinforce that characteristic.Try the soft-shell crab tempura, zucchini flower with feta and olive tapenade, confit duck croquette, or asparagus salad with poached egg.
