Enjoy a couple's weekend at the Margaret River

Western Australia's (WA) Margaret River offers a plethora of activities for a blissful couple's weekend. It's located in the south-west of the region and is less than three hours drive from the state's capital. If a relaxing weekend away is what you and your loved one need, consider the Margaret River region. You'll be spoilt for choice with fantastic activities and breathtaking scenery.

Blossoming biodiversity

There are just 34 internationally recognised biodiversity hotspots on the planet - and WA's south-west is one of them!

It's the only area in Australia to have this status.

There are 69 rare and priority flora species and 4 priority ecological communities in this area.

Woodlands, swamps and sandy soil are all features of this incredibly diverse land. Head to the Margaret River between September and November if you want to be there during the colourful wildflower season.

The wildflowers and graceful orchids are a huge drawcard for botanists, but they also paint the perfect backdrop for lovers, too.

Marri, karri and eucalypt forests are also dotted throughout the area, attracting many visitors.

Take a tour

Go on a Margaret River Discovery Tour as a couple if you want to experience as much of this beautiful region as possible in a short timespan.

There are various options available, depending on whether you want to see powerful waterfalls, go canoeing or swill a fine drop at local wineries.

Your guide will take you around the region in a luxury off-road vehicle, providing intimate knowledge of the area and taking you to see breathtaking coastal scenery.

A sunset canoe tour might be the perfect way to begin a relaxing weekend when you arrive, setting the mood for a romantic few days.

Catching the sun dipping down over the Indian Ocean is quite a sight, and you'll be glad to share it with your loved one.

Natural wonders

There are several caves in the Margaret River region that wow visitors year-round.

Don't miss the chance to explore at least one of them - whether it's Lake, Jewel or Mammoth. All caves have stunning natural formations.

You can guide yourself around these natural wonders or choose to have a tour guide show you around and explain their history - it's entirely up to you.

There's the Moondyne cave too, where you can have a truly unique caving experience. You'll don gloves, overalls and helmets and be guided through spots that are both wide and narrow.

The stalactites have a fragile beauty that captivates visitors year-round. Because of environmental sensitivities, trips only run from June to December each year.

Sink your teeth in

Once you've explored the Margaret River region's incredible natural beauty, you'll probably be quite hungry!
Whether you've spent a day exploring the caves or meandering along one of the many stunning walking trails, a hearty meal is probably on the cards.
Palmer Wines produces many award-winning drops, from a well-rounded Chardonnay to a sassy Shiraz.
The Palmers Winery Restaurant is the perfect place to dine if you're after a touch of romance. Pair the perfect glass of red with a hearty herb-crusted lamb backstrap or tender scotch fillet.
The restaurant takes inspiration from various cuisine, offering decadent fare that includes miso-crusted Patagonian toothfish to Malaysian-inspired Wagyu beef Penang curry, offset by a fresh cucumber and mint salad.
If you're able to squeeze in a sweet treat following an entree and a main, why not share a sumptuous dessert with your other half?
Whether it's the caramelised charm of banoffee pie topped with crushed pecans or the richness of chocolate marquise with poached raspberries that appeals, you're sure to enjoy the final course at this refined eatery.
For those who don't have a sweet tooth, why not share the classic Palmer cheese plate with a glass of dessert wine?
So go on - relax in the Margaret River region, if even just for a weekend.
